Anyone have first hand experience or know a buddy who has used an outfitter that provides a drop camp for elk?

You will need to plan ahead because it will take a point or two

John Sund of Eagle Mountain Outfitters in Gunnison, Co or LB Mullin from West Elk Wilderness outfitters. Both run drop camps. That is draw for Archery and might need a point, can usually draw first rifle as first choice with 0 points. 2nd and 3rd rifle are OTC.

Sorry 2021 or 2022. Trying to help out some buddies who are new to western hunting. Appreciate the recommendations.

I can definitely help with that. I know a guy who runs a small outfit in Montana with a really nice camp. I’ll message you.

J Bar H Outfitters has one drop camp open for this year. These guys have won awards for their service and successes. The camp available is for the third season. This is a OTC area during second and third rifle. Good luck.

We’re using J Bar H first season this year. Really excited but a little apprehensive about the crowds we’re sure to encounter. In the past we’ve used Bar Diamond Ranch in 53/54. They’re great people and we had so-so success, but always a great time. Admittedly we didn’t really know what we were doing though either. It was great fishing some of the mountain lakes and being way back there and not seeing anyone else.

If it were me I'd really try and find a drop camp on private property, especially if you end up in an OTC unit. If not you'd be better off just doing a DIY hunt. Just my opinion.. good luck

I’ve ran into both Jon Sund and Bruce Mullin while hunting on my own with my horses in 54. Both really nice guys, that were very helpful, something you don’t usually find from ouatfitter’s when you’re in their territory. I’ve moved on to other units, but you won’t find anymore beautiful and rough country than 54. Craig
