The Daiwa Spinmatic Pack Spinning rod is the best I've found for the weight and money for backpacking in CO. It's a 4 piece 6'6" UL so it will allow you to cast a lot further than the cheaper telescoping rods. If you do change your mind on budget and want to get the best value reel, I highly recommend the Pflueger President reels as they are the best reel you can buy for the money. However, I understand if you are treating this as something you will probably only use on this trip in which case I'd look at a few of the different Daiwa options as I have one of their cheap reels and it works perfectly fine and most high country lakes you won't even use the drag even with 4lb test.

This setup ought to get you going for your budget (free shipping if you hit $50)

Here's a fish caught on that little daiwa. There's no backbone in the rod, but it makes the fishing fun. I've had this one for 5 yrs I think.

Kayaking up at our cabin in northern Wisconsin. Love packing the little spinner on the trip and toodle around the lake with a little spinner listening to the loons.
