Range Finder for Colorado - Rifle and Archery

I am looking to get a new range finder (my old one goes through 8 AAA batteries a day) for hunting Colorado. My primary criteria is elevation adjustment, waterproof, and not ungodly expensive. Ideas?

By elevation adjustment do you mean angle compensation?

Not sure on waterproofness? But my Sig has been through some halacious storms here in CO during both archery and rifle. Kilo 2200 would be my pick (or what I picked).

We use the Leupold 1600. We have 3 of them. Not necessarily the best but they have worked well for us. You can find them on sale combined with Activejunky, you can get a decent deal. The one I bought for my son was under $300, after everything.

I just picked up a demo sig kilo 850 for $72 on optics planet. Angle compensation max range 1200 yards, good reviews. For a piece of equipment that I use on average about 12 seconds per year, I really don’t want to spend more than I have to..

For a good unit, not expensive look at the Athlon Optics Midas 1200Y Rangefinder for $174.99, or for the best then it's the Leica Rangemaster CRF 2400-R

I understand you want to stay on the cheap side but with cheap comes bad quality. I am the kind of guy that with buy once cry once I want the best product out there cause put your self elk hunting and a bull of a lifetime walks threw and he is at that range maybe 50yards or maybe 60yards and I go to range him and my rangefinder fails and wont range NO THANKYOU I just cant put myself to that anymore. I figure I spend 20 bucks at the gas station on snacks and redbull then take my wife to dinner and that's 65 bucks then oh crap I could use those boots 300 you guys get the idea lol just spend the extra couple hundred and you will have it for ever. I run the LEICA rangemaster 2700B and I love it waterproof gaskets fastest laser to range back to back and I have the ballistics calculator for my rifles as well plus LECIA'S warranty is great.

I played around with my kilo 850 yesterday. It gives an instant reading to anything I point at within about 450. From about 450-600 it takes a second to pick it up but has no problem hitting tree trunks or canopy. The farthest it would go for me was 838 ranging a building, but it really struggled past 700. Could have been partly the lighting (very bright and sunny) but I did expect it to range a little farther as they advertise 1200 max range (600 deer, 800 tree). That being said it’s more than adequate for what I need it to do and it was dirt cheap. If you plan to shoot at stuff in the 500+ range then it’s probably not for you.

Three AAA batteries a day? Yikes! I thought most rangefinder units used a single CR2 battery. I have owned several different models and a single battery usually lasts at least a whole hunting season. I carry one spare battery in my pack.

I really like my Leica 2400. Good glass, quick reads, scan mode, angle compensation.

I have the same one. Its worked perfect for me. It can range farther than I can shoot.

I just picked up the new Sig BDX system (the kilo1800 & SIerra 3 scope), but you can just use the Range finder by itself and it will give you the elevation corrections in mills or MOA if you enter all your ballistic info into the app. Then you just range and dial your turret and shoot

Will also be using the range finder ofr archery -it has angle compensation

Would take a hard look at leica. I did cheap range finders and went through all the brands, Bushnell, Nikon, Vortex, Leica and Sig. I finally broke down and have a Gunwerks G7. It was worth the money and I probably spent double on my way. Leica was my next favorite and only got the G7 to have an independent ballistic calculator to supplement my kestrel that could pull double duty on closer archery shots.
