Rain Jacket- Mid September Northern Ontario

Moose hunt, northern Ontario, 5 day fly in hunt. How much of a rain jacket do I need? Outfitter says, good rain jacket.......we talking Kuiu Yukon good or REI good? Thanks!

Spend 10 days in the brooks last year and used Pnuma rain gear(3L Element Proof Rain Jacket) . Wetted out everyday by mid afternoon after having it completely dry via stove in tent all night. I would have said it was much better than REI rain gear.

Taking a Kuiu Yukon jacket this year. lots of good recommendations from rokslide. Cold and Wet sucks

hiking or boating or vtt? if not hiking i will look for grundens, helly hansen or guy cotten and you will thank if it is really raining.

My KUIU Yukon is the best rain jacket that I've ever owned...it's bombproof and totally trustworthy. I also have the pants and they are excellent as well, especially when field dressing a bull. Both are always with me on moose hunts.

I agree with the above recommendation for HH etc, but as mentioned, only if you're mostly stationary and not hiking around. I have a HH rain jacket and it's water-proof for sure, but it doesn't breathe. It's a less expensive option, but if I'm moving around my HH is not my choice because I quickly sweat out and get soaked from the inside.

indeed you must remain not active otherwise the wet is on both side ...

I’ve got a Yukon that has held up for yearly moose hunts since I got it back in 2021. Before that I had a stone glacier rain jacket and that thing suuuucked.

I also have a few Branden’s and belly Hansen rain jackets around which are great for moose hunting when I’m sitting on hills in the rain or driving jet boats, shouldering moose quarters etc.

Diff note: I have a Sitka Delta jacket I use for duck hunting.....I think this would suffice for a trip and save some $$$.......bad idea?

I think the best answer for you is based upon the specific context details of your hunt. Hunting specifics can and do vary greatly between our individual hunts. Specific clothing choices we make are best made within the specific context details of the hunt we have planned.

For example, if one's hunt is flying to a heated cabin on a lake for five-days, then one has more degrees of freedom in clothing options...you can dry out your wet clothing every night and it's ready to go every morning. Conversely, if one's hunt is living in a two-man tent in the middle of nowhere, then one has less degrees of freedom in clothing options...you've got to have truly trusted gear & clothing for whatever Mother Nature throws at you (and in that context, it's worth every penny spent).

Think about the specifics of your hunt and make your decision. BTW, I'm the guy doing 10-14 days in the two-person tent in the middle of nowhere...therefore, my choice and recommendation is KUIU Yukon.

I recommend a rain gear from Grunden’s. They make gear mainly designed for fishing in Alaska. Worked well on a moose hunt in BC last year.

time to test in your hunting conditions before making the move? being miserable and wet is not fun at all...

I have used my Sitka Delta wading jacket on several rainy hunts. I used it on a moose hunt in Canada in 2024. It worked extremely well, I was dry every time, as I am when using it for waterfowl hunting. None of the big game hunts I've used it on required extended hiking, mainly moving slowly through the forest. My moose hunt was a lake hunt and mainly from a skiff. One thing about this jacket is it is not a quiet garment, like fleece. If it is raining, this is less of a concern but if you will need a silent stalking jacket this is not the one. If you need to stay absolutely dry no matter the weather, it is. My wife has the Kuiu Chugach jacket and pants and they have worked very well for her.

I have this jacket as well. It is awesome, till it's not. Gortex is just an old German word that means "gets wet very slowly" lol.
It works for a while and keeps you warm, till it doesnt. When its raining that bad I am not walking around I just wear my HH and glass
