Quitting Alcohol

I am from family and country that I witness so many bad bad things about drinking, . I was abused k both physical and verbal, I hate it so much. I don’t want my kids to go through what I did deal with.
I decided that I don’t drink at all, so far I am pretty happy with my decision.

At one of the weddings I went to this summer, I took some of my Busch NAs. They have the red ring around the top of the can. I do remember feeling a little ashamed/weird about having that in my hand. Not sure if most ppl even know what the red means but I felt a little weird about it. Not sure why.

The michelobe ultra zero slim cans are good too. I just hate that NA costs more than the real thing. I also find myself freely drinking and driving with an NA from the store. It'll be my luck that I get a DUI sipping on a damn NA.

I felt the same way at first. I’ve taken different brands to birthdays, wedding and rodeos and maybe only had a couple people notice. Most of the time I explain to thrown and they just say“ Good for you!”

This has to be my favorite thread bc of the camaraderie displayed here.

What are some of the things you guys do for an event with the fellas that traditionally was a beer fest?
I'm not super social, but good high quality h2o is my go-to. I'll do a sparkling water or club soda if attending a fancier event.

You're not missing out on anything valuable, good call. Keep it up.

My go to is just a coke in a glass as I used to drink alot of Captian and cokes so everyone is none the wiser. After everyone else is a few in they completely forget you aren’t drinking and don’t even try and pressure anymore. Then you can sit back and enjoy the show
Just don’t hang out with the type of people that would “pressure” you to drink when you don’t want to.

This for sure. I’m around drinkers all the time. At first a few people would ask why I wasn’t drinking or give a WTF?! That all stopped after the first month or so. No one had tried giving me a drink or pressured me to have one in almost 3 years. If someone were to try that nonsense they’d no longer be on the friend list.

I was at a birthday party this weekend for my brother’s two young girls. Probably 50 people there and almost all drinkers. I used to participate in the drinking at a party for a 6 year old, lol. I just drank a water and all the guys drank their share of beer. I hadn’t seen a few of them in a couple years, and man it seemed like a few of em aged 10 years in no time. You really notice things when you’re looking at it from the outside.

Yeah I met up with a buddy a few months back when I was visiting my dad. I hadn’t drank for a while and my buddy wanted to meet at a brewery, fine with me. Anyways my buddy had his kid with him, he was pounding IPAs like he was in college and he got dumb pretty quick. I was embarrassed for him, I don’t think he realized how dumb he was acting or how badly his fitness had degraded in the few years since I’d seen him. He was like super skinny, no muscle with a big beer belly and a big double chin.

After he had hammered back a gallon of IPA, he nearly got arrested for pissing in the parking lot next to his truck. Like bro….c’mon.

There’s definitely momentum picking up with the NA beers. I foresee there being more options as time goes on. Ultra Zero is pretty legit. Another competitor in the NA beer sector to check out is Best Day Brewing. They are similar to Athletic

Those things are gross though. I tried some of the athletic breading ones. It had all the calories and bloating effects of a beer just without the alcohol.

Hop water is pretty good though. The N/A beer thing has always seemed pretty desperate to me.

I'm at about 3.5 months dry. 1 slip up about 2.5 months in when I had a particularly bad day and literally poured 4 beers down my throat in about 2 minutes after work. The buzz was disappointing and my wife noticed before I could get a few more down.

I'm not an alcoholic, but the consumption was at a point I started to worry about it becoming a problem as well as a minor health concern, so I decided it was time.

It's unfortunate that I spent 10+ years of my life in the brewing industry only to feel like I have to quit, as it was a real passion and something I loved doing and was a huge part of my life. After changing careers to something with more earning potential, I started drinking rusty water beer to save money and there went the whole reason for those years.

I'm not sure at this point how I feel about it and if it will be forever, but I'm generally an all or nothing person and suck at moderation so unless I somehow change that aspect of my brain function I might not ever have beer again. I really miss beer and sharing them with my wife on our dates, and visiting breweries on trips.

What hop water have you tried you think is best? I've never had a good one. Hops really need a bit of sweetness, body in the liquid, and fermentation to bring out their good characteristics. Otherwise I just find them overly bitter, grassy, onion, and sulfury.

The best day brewing N/As are actually pretty good if you can get them fresh.... Like within a month of canning and stored cold.

I just went to my 20 year HS reunion. I was the guy that would hammer vodka and throw up in someone's car or get exiled to a pickup bed for the night.

It was very strange hanging out with my buddies while they drank 20 beers and weirdly eyeballed the 4 N/As I nursed wondering if what they saw was real.

Weird weird weird it was. At least I felt better than they did the next day haha

I picked some up at a brown jug in Anchorage it think it was called “hop melt” or something strange like that. It was surprisingly good, like a beer flavored lacroix. It wasn’t bad.

Several months back I got a 6 pack of athletic brewing ipa, the taste was good but it still bloated and had a bunch of calories I just wasn’t looking for, it just didn’t appeal to me as something I’d want to drink ever again.

I’m about a year and a half sober and find it confusing why I and so many others drink so much, let alone at all. There’s no part of me that desires to be a drinker again.. but I feel like a strange little part of my brain could snap at any minute and I’d be a few beers deep. Alcohol is an interesting beast and an awful complement to life in my case.

My life has gotten so much better/easier since I quit. Prob not a coincidence I’ve been more successful in my hunting too. The amount of drive and motivation I’ve gained is significant

If anyone wanted to talk about it privately reach on out.

Recently came to the conclusion I want/need to stop drinking. I've seen a few guys on here say they've been sober for years.

I've been pretty strong willed when it comes to kicking habits, but this one has been a one step forward three steps back one. Haha

Those of you who have stopped did you notice many benefits on your hunts, mindset, or physical shape?
Any tips on the process?
Go see your doctor and have him scare the hell out of you

Not to get too technical here but it's pretty clear based on the data that no amount of alcohol is good for you. It can be very difficult to abstain sometimes.... If you do choose to have a drink now and then it probably wont affect you long term when used in moderation and can provide some social utility.
