So on the 23rd I went down to my local REI to get a few things. While there I found a Spray called Tectron DWR Water repellant spray. This restores the Waterproofing on Coats pants boots tents whatever you want to apply it to. Over time the coating on your waterproof gear can wear out and restoring it with a spray like http://www.rei.com/product/672447/tectron-gear-water-repellent Can help bring new life back to your garment.

So on the 23rd I had time off and was bored and decided to go and apply this to my Kryptek Coat and my EDC Coat I wear. I opened my Garage up hung the coats right at the open doorway and proceeded to spray them down. All went well no issues.

About 2 hours later I started coughing. I could tell something was wrong. I figured ok I must of breathed a little bit of it from the spray back. I let it ride figuring it would get better but no Bueno. I slept that night sitting elevated on the cough in my TV room and managed to sleep through the night. Next morning I woke up with a screaming headache and a mad ringing in my ears also tingling in my fingers. At this point I knew something was definitely way off. I called the wife at work to come home cause I needed to get over to the Hospital. I really knew something was wrong when I talked to her as she sounded like Mini Mouse on the phone.

She came home took me to the ER and was put on oxygen. It turns out that this spray had actually waterproofed my Lungs and cut my Oxygen levels down to 54% (Normal Person CO2 Saturation is 90+ % Anything less and your starving your brain). The ER staff was amazed that I walked in there on my own 2 legs and hadnt passed out.

The next 5 days was spent admitted in the Hospital while they pumped me full of C02 Steroids (open my airway) and Antibiotics. By Friday after Christmas I was getting back to normal and they released me from the Hospital.

Moral to the story here is I learned I will be using a mask from now on with anything to do with Spraying. It didnt recommend you wear a mask at all with this stuff. Just said to use in a Well Ventilated area. I had my garage completely open and was at the doorway when I sprayed this stuff.

So if you have plans to use something similar. learn from my mistake. Even if it doesnt say it throw a mask on to be safe. Coats are waterproofed again. About 3000 in Medical Bills from the stay. (insured) and a big slice of Humble Pie about taking extra precautions from now on when dealing with anything coming from spray can.
Turns out after much research on this there are 1000s of cases of people going through this same ordeal from similar products out there. If Id of known that then...... Hopefully me getting the word out will help others not do the same and go through this crap.

DANG!!

thanks for the public service announcement!! did you call the manufacturer? what are the ingredients..i'd love to look up the MSDS..

feel better bud.

Yeah I looked at the ingredients its very vague. Fluoropolymers . Safe for environment, man made substance. No other details. I consulted an attorney on it. See if I have a case to get back some medical costs. and lost time at work. But we shall see. I think more should be said on the warning like Wear a mask. This is the exact stuff I used.

So glad to hear you are OK!! That must have been a bit alarming to say the least. And thank you for spreading the word; sorry that the warning came at your expense.

They should have had a warning like that- because when I think about it, it makes sense how this could happen. I had a similar, but not as severe situation with some silicone spray on boots one time. I was spraying them outside and had them on the ground and was bent over, and with 2nd pass over the boots there was a slight gust of wind and I got some blow back in my face. I washed up good, but within about 45 minutes I had a bad coughing spell that lasted quite a while. And.... The next morning I also woke up with a terrible headache also. I never went to the ER, because I did not think it was too bad, but I was a bit concerned, as I thought-" great, I waterproofed my lungs with silicone".

I do not seem the be the worst for wear ( but wife and friends may say otherwise :D) But since then I try to use a mask around any sprays, even though it is usually my nature to just think with most things- "oh well I don't have to really take any precaution here, it will be OK".

Hope your New Year is healthy and great!

THanks Mike. IM back to full health after this. Need to see the doctor again for a check up but things are good.

Geez damn crazy stuff. I wear an industrial filter mask made for spraying automotive paints anytime at all I'm spraying or using any kind of chemicals and it's always done outside with a fan blowing away from me to be extra extra careful.

Or were you training your body for high elevation hunts?

I kid, glad youre ok

haha no but it kinda worked towards that goal anyways =-)

Man scary stuff right there, glad your ok.

On a side note, that stuff works really well I would wager

I can't believe I didn't see this earlier. Glad you're ok man. Horrible way to spend Christmas, but thankfully you pulled through.
