Question for those that have taken shots on Dall’s

Prone~120yds. Sitting~50ishyds. Prone/standing follow up~80yds.

As someone from the northeast, I have been lucky enough to take 2 from a prone position with a Harris Bipod and a small dry bag used as a rear rest.

1st at 346 yds at 5:30 pm on Day 10 of a 10 day hunt and 13 miles from base camp after pulling an all nighter on the same ram the day before...arrived back at the tent at 8am the next morning...plane arrived at 10am with the next hunter.

2nd at 415 yds after running about 300 yds after getting winded...could not get steady when finally got set up when rams were at 350 yds...everything came together when the ram stopped, turned to look back and I heard my guide say, "415" in a confident voice.

Hard to tell from pic but basically snuck over a ridge to shoot down. Used pack to get rear support elevated a bit and bipod on front “modified prone”

Mine was taken prone with a bipod, BUT I practiced a lot sitting/kneeling with a tripod as well.

As mentioned several times, if possible shoot a bunch up/downhill

I didn’t practice offhand, but while unlikely- you never know.

My one shot at a Dall, I got above them while bedded & they fed back under - so I was seated, shooting downhill, using my upright backpack as shooting stick + screen. For my stone, I was laying flat against a very steep hill and then shot at 90 degree angle across body and hill (almost like a standing shot position but laying against a steep slope) : uncomfortable. I had a chance to be packer for another dall and on that one, the guy was standing but laying over a large boulder and shooting downhill - almost like he was shooting/leaning over the top of a vw bug.

Well, better late than never, I did end up getting my ram at around 150 yards uphill shot prone using my pack.

Prone most common. Have done off tripod as a rest while kneeling, off a pack, with bipods, standing offhand (really close). Quite a few ways.

On my Dall it was uphill and far, 520 yards. Used a dead rest off my pack, kneeling position on one knee and a large boulder. Used a standing position against a tree branch at 195 yards on my bighorn. Prone downhill at 105 yards on my Stone. Closer is better.

I practiced a lot with different field positions, and especially for follow up shots if needed.
