Tripod height

Kicking around the idea of upgrading my tripod from my manfrotto befree. One thing about the one I have that I kind of consider a con is I can't use it standing. Mind you I have not "needed" to use it standing but it gets almost all the way there, which seems silly. I see advantages and disadvantages to standing or sitting tripods. If you were only going to get 1 tripod would you get a taller, heavier one you could use standing and shoot off of pretty good or an ultralight short one (thinking aziak backcountry or similar) that you could shoot off of better than nothing?

It seems that for me the height of the one I currently have puts it in the worst of both worlds, the weight of a taller tripod but not tall enough.

I am in the process of upgrading my tripod set up. Below is my current thought process.

I am planning to ditch my lightweight tripod that I can glass from standing (shooting off of it sucks). Because if I am carrying it on my pack, I’m finding a spot to sit and glass 10/10 times. I already have a super heavy tall tripod in the truck that I used for glassing from the road (don’t need two full height tripods).

I want to get an inverted tripod that I can glass/shoot from in the sitting/kneeling positions. Just haven’t settled on the exact model/head yet. I don’t see myself ever opting to take a shot standing off a tripod.

Currently I am debating an aziak frontcountry or a sirui. I think the frontcountry on paper I like better but the sirui offerings seem solid for the price.

We have a lot of great options. The Benro Rhino line has a lot of good options. The ball heads in the kits are great to shoot off of. They are all carbon Fiber and they come with 5 year warranties. Give me a call to discuss the options. If you want to order from our website, use promo code promo24 and you will get 10% off on any Benro product. It also will work on Slik, Sirui and Promaster tripods

Take a look at the Leo photo inverted leg versions, there is a compact one that you could use for everything but standing.

Aziak Front Country looks to fit the bill for me as a standing setup. I have a Sirui AT-125 on the way already and will compare. In a perfect world I'd have both Aziaks and choose which one is needed based on the hunt. One thing I don't consider is shooting off of one as I primarily bow hunt.

How tall are you?

I have a slik 634 and outdoorsmans tall adapter and I can use it standing with the center post up as long as the wind is light. A true standing height tripod that doesn’t need the center post for standing height like the tall outdoorsmans is superior but pretty heavy.

Glassing while standing isn’t my preferred method and is less effective overall but it’s nice to have. It can help you get above brush or even just help you mix it up after a couple hours of sitting. Glassing standing > not glassing at all. Also you can put the legs together and use it as a monopod

Slik 883 is what I use. Pretty sure that is the model #. Using the outdoorsmans micro pan head. It goes with me everywhere while hunting.

I am still relatively new to tripod glassing. I got the Aziak Back Country and absolutely love it. Though I will admit I have found a couple situations where due to vegetation I wish I was able to stand behind it. It has left me wondering if I would enjoy having a tripod that's capable of standing height.

It's one of my goals at hunt expo this year just to get hands on a couple standing height tripods and compare.

How sturdy is the 883 while standing. I am 6’4” and the 634 just does not cut while standing and using my 14s.
