Question for the Dall sheep hunters

Man I gotta start hunting with you boys for these easy to spot sheep... Lol. Most of the big ones we find are hiding in the crags and nasties and all you get a view of is thier head or a piece of horn if your lucky. Most times the only time we get em in the nice grassy slopes is for a picture... Hehehe

ain't that the truth!

I've only hunted dall sheep in the NWT and AK (Chugach and the Kenai) and in the areas we hunted them they were stupid easy to spot. The same for goats in the Kenai and BC. I can appreciate that it can vary by area - still not sure I would carry 15's.

Well I am almost talked out of it and I just bought the latest HD model! Dang! I was figuring since it is the late hunt Sept 9-20 ,maybe some snow on the ground, Black bears and wolf that dont stick out like sore thumbs are included if we get lucky, that the 15's might be a great tool. I have used 15's on Kodiak for bear but that was a lot of sitting on points and not buggering up the country with scent and even though this is airplane assisted to the hunting area I would hate to drag them up there and leave them in the tent. The Nevada draw is tomorrow, since I have max point on Deserts and im feeling lucky I will just use the hell out of them then. Of course I thought last year I was going to draw too. LOL! Thanks for the input Roksliders!

Must be an exciting time sitting on max points for deserts. I'm thinking those 15's will get a good workout if you draw that tag.

As for the dall hunt, talk to your outfitter, and specifically your guide. He'll be your best source of info on whether the big boy bins will be worth it in your hunting area.

If you discuss with your outfitter or guide first ask them if they've used 15's mounted on a tripod extensively. If they haven't used them their advice won't be worth much since there's no way someone can appreciated how effective they are unless they've been behind them for a few weeks. My Stone Sheep outfitter's only experience with them was a client who was trying to use them like most of use 8x and 10x binos and he had a good laugh when I asked him his advice.

Good point, as soon as I think 15x I think tripod, but some people don't realize that tripods are pretty much a necessity with them.

Overkill.

Take some Leica 8X32 ultravid HDs, or swaro SV or Zeiss FL, and then let your alpha spotter do the dirty work.
I've hauled bigeyes into the sheep mountains and it was regrettable. I remember hauling those 10X56 nightowls with leaded glass--ouch!
The only time the uber bincs have been justified for me in the mountains is bighorn hunting where there is mucho canopy for those buggers to bed under. 15's would be welcome there; but not for dalls or even Kodiak goats. They are easy to find above treeline.

My .02.

And you are exactly right. The 15's never left the main camp and I used the 10x32 exclusively.

Good Job on a first time go! Ive got 3 seasons with 4 hunts and yet to see a full curl. that's excellent ram. How old? I see 9.

Good eye! That is what the biologist in Glenallen saw too. The goat was 8.

Congratulations on two great animals! If you get time, we would love to hear the story behind both.
