Pump rifle

Lotta complaints here about accuracy here. I have a 7600 in 35 whelen that is fantastically accurate. It is a really nice shooter and I can't believe what I can do with it given the insanely creepy trigger. It has been out of rotation for a decade, but I'm thinking of reviving it for a trip now and then for elk in the timber.
that's a keeper then! I've heard a couple people say that you can accurize them to a decent degree, but I really dont know as much about their inner workings as I should. Not sure if there is something where a rare gun is super accurate like yours, or if there is a wear issue that causes them to loosen up a little over time, or if I'm just not good at managing recoil (entirely possible). Only based on what I've seen, I've been around many dozens of these guns between friends and frequently seeing them at the range, and I would say if you are shooting legit better than 1.5" 3-shot groups on a consistent basis you should consider it an above-average gun.

Timney does make a trigger kit for these, I have one on mine. It takes it from creepy 6 lb trigger to a creepy 3lb trigger. For the type of hunting most folks use these guns for it's probably fine, but it's still very creepy and I cringe a little every time I squeeze it.

I forgot how bad the trigger is on these until I read this. Just went, got it out and dry fired it. Holy crap.
I mean, its basically a shotgun that shoots single projectiles. All that said, I doubt there is more than a handful of the animals I've killed in my life that I would not have stoned just as dead with that trusty Amish Assault Rifle

I have some beautiful and reliable bolt guns for serious hunting. To this day every now and then I bring out the oldies, marlin 30-30, Winchester 1894, ruger #1. I just want another, there’s not much more that says America then a box of whitetail and a lever action or pump action rifle

Shot terribly. No ergonomics at all. Useless in any supported position. Can’t use sling for support and take advantage of follow-up shot ability. Just smoking garbage.

It’s a miracle I killed the buck with it in one shot. The doe took four bad hits before I killed her. When I made the owner shoot it at a target, the thing shot an 8” 5-shot group at 100 yards. It just so happened that the first shot on the buck was in the middle of that circle. They are built for spraying and praying offhand, not anything precise. Totally defeats the point of having a center fire rifle.

If your experience differs… then your experience differs.
That is a pretty good group at 100 yards - - - for a smoothbore shotgun....

Always have to keep in mind, especially online "I will take my experience over your opinion."

FYI I’m not looking for a rifle to replace my tikkas or my Christensen, I’m looking to add to a cool collection of lever guns and single action revolvers, older guns that I can still use now and then

I used a 742 for 10 seasons starting at age 11. Used a model Six Remington pump a couple months after and it was sweet...but i was basically coming from the same gun.

Oh heck no!
I now have 270 and 308 in 7600 that shoot under 2 inches, mostly under 1.5...and I'm shaky.

Now and then? Id bet 95% of us could use one full time and not skip a beat. I certainly do, albeit I live in a short-range hunting area. They work and they work well, lots of people prefer them. That they dont have minute-of-mosquito accuracy doesnt change that. Just be clear eyed about what they are and you’ll be happy with em.

I’d prefer the browning but would go for a rem. There are no rose colored glasses here I also hunt with marlin stamped 30-30s and a! Early 1980s Winchester 1894

Have you ever used the Browning pump?
Sum-bitch pinched my finger and I slung it into the bushes cussing like a maniac. Cleaned it up pretty and said goodbye. They have a funky back and down close stroke.

I have a 760 rebored from 308 to 358 Winchester. It shoots OK. I am going to shorten and thread the barrel. If I buy a 30-06 it will get rebored to 9.3 X 62. Then I can handle anything in North America. My 358 has a scout scope mount, Peep backup sight, Timney trigger parts, and a replacement stock., (choate). The action takes a Rem 870 20 gauge butt stock. I have the O ring to replace the worn one in the fore end. No more rattle. If you have one you know how handy it can be. Be Well, BG.

The 308 was enough to handle anything in North America.

Cool to know the butt stock is interchangeable with an 870 though. This thread really makes me want to add one back to my arsenal.
