Puffy Pants Versus

I actually hate cold and I don't deal with it well. I have less than 10% body fat and consequently, I easily get cold. But, those fleece-lined water-resistant synthetic/cotton blend pants, coupled with wool/synthetic blend long johns, keep my legs warm when sitting for 10 to 12 hours at a stretch.

As a small guy (5'8" & 150 lbs), I get cold easy when I'm not moving. My legs don't get to feeling cold but the heat they lose is significant and affects my whole body. So you may think fleece lined pants and long johns are adequate because your legs don't feel cold, but I bet you are loosing a lot of heat from them. That's where puffy pants can help, plus they are not bulky and heavy like fleece lined cotton pants.

But, I don't need puffy pants. Never did and I don't ever see myself needing them. It's a waste of money, space and weight. I'm not a "sheep" and I don't follow trends. I have no use for expensive, unnecessary puffy pants, when my fleece-lined pants work exceptionally well in sub-zero temperatures when sitting on a windy ridge.

I have not bought any yet either, but there have been many times I've wished I had some on. As I have gotten older it has become more important to reduce the heat loss from my legs. The vast majority of my hunting is in the east on stand rather than behind glass in the west. Quiet fabrics matter and I don't like the noise of the shell material that has to be used to retain down. That has been a major factor holding me back so far. If Kuiu would make their Kenai pants in camo that would work for me, but they are still not offering them in camo.

You're wrong about that. Sorry.
Ok well then you’re some kind of a freak of nature and you shouldn’t be advocating for other people to go get frostbite lol. I have the same Wrangler fleece lined pants. Love em. But I couldn’t wear them sitting for long periods below freezing. I would like like this in no time.

I've got Nunatak pants, Rab (lighter weight). Both are good for intended purposes. Neither are going to stand up to brush, so if I'm in really cold temps and walking (-20) I'm wearing a cover layer over them. Works fine. If I'm just sitting or is warmer, I carry them to where I'll be then put them on. Think in layers. Nothing is going to provide every single benefit, so get a warm layer, under a quiet layer. Adapt.

Feathered Friends makes one that is comparable

13oz total weight, 4.4 fill, 900 down (3960) for $279

I have the FF Helios pants. Bought them as seconds for $190, though can't find anything wrong. Pretty incredible. No pockets. Just unzip a little to access pants pockets underneath. I don't carry much in pants pockets, mainly using my jacket.

I also have the Helios jacket. Imagine transforming into a toasty Michelin Man when you sit down to glass. I love them both.

Made in USA. More and higher loft down. To me, no contest.

I'm not advocating frostbite. Just laying out some common sense logic for anyone who doesn't want to follow the online influencer's sheep herd.

Suggesting that folks should sit in windy -20 for 12 hours in fleece pants and long johns isn't common sense logic. That's how unprepared/inexperienced people die of exposure. I'm not going to call you a liar as I haven't had the same experiences you have, but I'd be a miserable S.O.B. sitting in a windy 30 degrees for 1 hour in the clothing you've described. -20 for 12 windy hours is really difficult to believe and would leave 99.99999% dead where they were sitting.

I was going to buy the SG ones, but then scored the Kuiu pants on sale for $180. They will spend a lot of time in your pack so go light.

Side note, anytime I see someone accusing others of being “sheep”, my first question is always, “are you religious?”

How many clients do you get that can sit in windy -20 for 12 hours straight in fleece pants and long johns? This is really starting to sound like a big fish story.

The majority of them can, but there's some that wus out on me. All of my repeat hunters are able to handle it.

As in New Testament? But nope, not religious. Not an organized church kinda guy. Turns me off totally.

Obvious troll job is becoming more obvious. At what point do you and the super clients put on insulated cold weather gear? -60 or so? I've been in -20 for two weeks at a time and fleece pants and long johns are a death sentence.

Briefs, two pair of LJ bottoms and the fleece-lined cotton/synthetic pants is all I wear for my lower half. If the wind is just a bit too brisk, I'll wrap my rain parka around my legs.
