Puffy pant?

I've thought about using a pair of puffy pants as an outer layer when I got to a glassing spot or around here for stand hunting.

Do any of you use puffy pants? How do you wear them(mid layer or outer layer)? Which brand(s) do you prefer? Would the Kuiu Super Down pants be a good one to get?

I use the Kuiu Superdown Pants for glassing. They go on easily over my other pants and boots and add quite a bit of warmth.

I have puffies but find my Woobie is all I need. Used it in a rain & hail storm one day, it was perfect.

I've used Puffy pants the way you describe. If you go KUIU, be extremely careful as they are FRAGILE. I've poked several holes in mine. The Sitka Kelvin pants are much more durable and synthetic instead of down. They aren't as packable, but they are much more durable. FOr as fragile as the KUIU pants are, they were definately designed to be worn under something. Not the case with the Sitka pants.

He's not kidding. I sold my Superdown cuz I froze in it, whereas I roast in my Kelvins.

Patagonia mars puffy pants. Synthetic and tough enough to be worn as an outer layer. Tons of them on ebay.

Feathered Friends have been the best for me and I've had Sitka and KUIU too. If you're not packing the far the US surplus primalofts ecws layer is great too.

I wish Kifaru would consider bringing to market a pant version of their Lost Park Parka.

^^^^this right here. Sold my Kevin jacket for the Lost Park Parka and haven't looked back. Best puffy jacket I've owned. Had to keep the Kelvin pants until Kifaru makes some Lost Park Pants.

Military surplus M65 field pant liners can be had on eBay for practically nothing. I use them as a layer for tree stand hunting in the Midwest and have used them as an over the pant outer layer occasionally. Pretty light and are a lot warmer than you'd think.

I just bought a pair of kryptek kratos Pants from camofire. That is exactly my plan. Throw tgem in my pack. When I get to my stand throw them over my layers just to cut the chill. As it warms or I start moving again throw them back in my bag. That being sad I have not used them yet and I won't until probably mid November or so. I don't know if it will be a big pain than it's worth or not.

I too scored some Kyrptek Kratos on camofire last year, shopped around but couldn't pass up that deal. I only use them treestand hunting. Wear light pants in, put those in my climber, put them on at the base of the tree, and throw a rain shell over top if there is any moisture. They fit kind of weird around my mega thighs, and like all puffys the outer fabric is fragile and not meant to encounter brush and jaggers. Major improvement over what I had been packing in though.

These. like $10 shipped, same loft as the patagonia micropuff pants, and easier to throw on over layers (huge leg opening rather then side zips). I'm so happy with them I'm selling my Patagonia Mars pants because I never use them anymore.

I have had really good luck with my Kryptek Kratos puffy pants. They remain in my pack and come out when I am at the top of the mountain and need to stay warm. I generally only wear them when not on the move to take off the chill. Whichever pant you go with I think you will be glad that you have a pair!

It isn't ultralight at 40oz, but the Hill People Gear Mountain Serape has been a great insulating layer for me. I've used it in lots of conditions, as a sleeping bag, blanket wrapped over legs, poncho, whatever is needed. I really like it. I've used it as a sleeping bag in damp 35 degree weather with my softshell jacket zipped up over the foot area and Sitka Core base layers and was comfortable. On day hunts I can take it and the Paratarp along plus a little extra food in case I decide to stay out overnight.
