Puffy jacket - hooded or hoodless?

If you hunt in really cold weather, hooded is key! So much warmer than a hoodless with an insulated hat or beanie. If it's just chilly, don't make no nevermind, get what you like.

I have both. Early season = no hood. Snow, freezing temps and wind = hooded plus hat and goretex over all that.

Not a hood fan as has been stated because of the blocking of sounds and peripheral vision loss, HOWEVER, without having the option when you sit to glass or just relax a bit and need to keep warm and/or the wind out, I like having the option of pulling a hood up.
I was so impressed with my Fortress Gear Hybrid Hoodie this past fall that I wore it almost exclusively hunting in Idaho, New York and Vermont and found myself using the hood way more than I had anticipated.

Hood adds a lot of warmth for not much weight. Provides protection from snow and wind. If you're wearing a puffy, then warmth is important, and you're likely not moving. Get a hood on a puffy.

Don't like hats/hoods, and have puffies with and without a hood. Unless warm summer days, the hooded puffy is the one going with me. No question. Much warmer than without and if you are sitting still much at all in any kind of marginal weather, you will want the hoody. Don't know 'til you try--I didn't.

Completely on the fence about this. I currently have three with a hood and just today bought another without one. This winter will be the test if the versatility of the right balaclava and hat will retain the same heat as a hood.

i love the hood on my superdown. i wear it as a mid layer, and when i am sitting still..i pull the hood over my head. it is super obvious, and immediate how much warmth it adds. i just pull it over whatever headwear i have on..

if i really planned poorly and i am trying to sleep..i wear that jacket and pull the hood up and then pull the sleeping bag hood over that..it is looser feeling than a beanie. warmer.

All I'm sayin' is, if ya wear a billed cap the freaking hood can't come down and 'hangs over my eyes'. AND you can't 'look into the sides of it', as it moves with the hat. I hear 'Beanie Babies' have those kinda problems, and squint......

Check out he RAB Micro light Hoody. Awesome jacket. By the way I'm all for a hoody. Amazing how much heat it retains.

I’ll only have hooded puffies. I use them all the time. If I don’t want to use it it’s not like it’s in the way and being a puffy it adds no discernible weight or real space taking issues. I wear a billed hat and concur that I have no issues with it falling in my eyes or moving with my head. That’s just my take on hoods.

No hood for me. Love my Lost Park Parka and super glad it's removable because I'd be tempted to cut it off otherwise.

Hooded Superdown jacket for backpacking for me. Extra warmth for minimal weight, and hood serves as a quick stuff sack for jacket during the hunt. I don't like wearing hoods when treestanding for all the reasons listed above.......but just fold them partially inside out and make a big collar so they are out of the way not causing trouble.

For me, it would depend on what other jackets are you wearing it over or under. I wear my insulated jacket over a softshell that already has a hood. I also wear my insulated jacket under rain jackets that already have hoods. I see no reason to have that many hoods, so my insulated jacket doesn't have a hood.
