Do I need a down jacket?

thank you everybody for the good feedback. I think I’m settled on getting a SG grunman.
I was a slow adopter of down. Basically grew up hearing my dad tell me how aweful down was (we lived in western Oregon, lots of rain). But, like others have suggested, I now always carry puffy jacket in all seasons and add the puffy pants during mid- to late rifle seasons

I’m a new user of the SG jacket and pants. They’re awesome!

You can still get them on sale at eurooptics, in case you haven’t seen

I am western Oregon as well and have been raised with a similar mindset !

Brilliant for around the campsite and in the evening in cold weather, or belaying on a cold day. If you need to keep warm in all weathers a synthetic is more versatile.

There is a lot of choice and variability in quality out there though.

I bought an Under Armour mens Ridge Reaper Alpine Ops jacket on sale one size too big.
So convenient for glassing or just taking breaks when its cool out. Packs super small, very lightweight and can fit over everything else when needed.

The grumman down pants are perfect too. I like wearing thin stretchy pants for hiking, but once you stop, the full-zip feature of hunting/mountaineering brand puffy pants makes it easy to go from having a very thin layer on your legs to being okay in freezing weather
