BLUF: use Gaia or repeatedly check that your OnX offline maps are available before heading into the backcountry.

Searching around, it appears that OnX KNOWS that there is a bug where your offline maps simply disappear. I'm running the latest OnX app on my Iphone 14 Pro, iOS 18. I have lots of offline map data downloaded and recently updated (that process SUCKS on the OnX maps and basically requires an overnight download). Twice now, I have ventured off grid and go to pull up my OnX maps only to discover my Offline maps content empty. Nothing. I'm in SOS mode, try switching to airplane mode, kill app, refresh.... nada.

Only fix seems to be to uninstall the app, reinstall and then spend the 12+ hours re-downloading offline maps. Pretty shitty software that is paid for, and potentially life-threatening or hunt-changing for sure. Luckily I have been in areas I'm familiar with, but damn this is an absolute deal breaker if you cannot rely on OnX for offline mapping.

We're sorry about the trouble there! We did have a bug that caused offline maps to be offloaded from a device, but the good news is that our engineers have remedied bug. To make sure this doesn't happen to you again, please make sure you're on the most updated version of the app (24.41.2). If you do experience this issue on the current version somehow, please contact us directly so that we can look into it for you and get everything fixed. Our email is [email protected] and our phone number is (406) 540-1600.

We also hear you on the time it takes to download and update offline maps. We'll pass your feedback along to our mapping and engineering teams. We're hopeful that they can identify and implement some improvements in the future that will decrease that download/update time.

Holy crap. How big of maps are you downloading? I always use the highest resolution and my maps take no more than a minute or two tops to download. Most of them are under 300mb.

I’m in a big state with hundreds of areas downloaded at high res. That was before OnX allowed larger area downloads at high res so I had to create dozens of adjoining areas per unit I hunted.

I might just re do all of my offline areas now that you can download larger areas. However, the first ~10 areas download super quick, then something throttles you and each subsequent queued areas takes minutes each. That’s why it takes overnight to get through a couple hundred.

I see they changed the max size again. I could get 1.9 gig hi res on the web side, now it's .41 max, but I can get 1.0 gig and a 14x10 mile hi res map on the phone side
