BLUF: use Gaia or repeatedly check that your OnX offline maps are available before heading into the backcountry.
Searching around, it appears that OnX KNOWS that there is a bug where your offline maps simply disappear. I'm running the latest OnX app on my Iphone 14 Pro, iOS 18. I have lots of offline map data downloaded and recently updated (that process SUCKS on the OnX maps and basically requires an overnight download). Twice now, I have ventured off grid and go to pull up my OnX maps only to discover my Offline maps content empty. Nothing. I'm in SOS mode, try switching to airplane mode, kill app, refresh.... nada.
Only fix seems to be to uninstall the app, reinstall and then spend the 12+ hours re-downloading offline maps. Pretty shitty software that is paid for, and potentially life-threatening or hunt-changing for sure. Luckily I have been in areas I'm familiar with, but damn this is an absolute deal breaker if you cannot rely on OnX for offline mapping.
