I know actual hunting is the best way to learn. I've been hunting the midwest for almost 2 decades and learn something new every year. I want to hunt "out west" and as a non resident I need to accumulate points and will not get a tag every year. At almost 50 I know I need more time than this. I am considering spending a week with "processed based hunter" on their semi guided OTC Utah hunt to learn some tactics next year since I probably wont get a limited entry tag yet. Does anyone have any knowledge about them or another plan like them?

I read their website and I like what they are offering. When I was guiding for an outfitter, a few hunters wanted to learn, most just wanted me to lead them to a big bull so they could pull the trigger. I enjoyed teaching. Check the reviews carefully, but for $3500 you will probably gain a good education.

That means something coming from a guide. Thank you. Hopefully someone who had been there finds this thread also. I am definitely interested and want to learn more.

Sounds like a good idea depending on the instructor and where its at. Hunting a private ranch or established tree stands could be completely different than a public land, lots of pressure, learning experience.

Did you ever go out and do this? I was listening to a podcast last week with him as a guest and was curious. The concept sounds appealing.

Not yet. Trying to carve time out with the constrictions of work and life. I know I am more lijely to do this than another guided hunt at this point.

If you are wanting experience (on public lands) you can do OTC antlerless hunts for way cheaper than that and get real world experience while you wait on your limited entry type hunt. You can figure out what gear does or doesn't work. How to e-scout and decide which areas hold game with boots on the ground experience. I know Montana has OTC antlerless elk and deer options for areas with public land access. Some of those antlerless elk tags are good from 8-15 to 2-15 so your time frame isn't as limited. Doing a low stress DIY hunt will give you lots of education for a lower cost.

Definitely high on my list. I enjoy a trophy on my wall as much as the next guy, but I am more interested in experiences at this point of my life. Thank you for the tip.

I have friends from all over come hunt with me. They know they are going to work hard and learn a bunch. I make them shoot in field positions and show them western spot and stalk hunting. We hunt the badlands, river bottoms, and forested mountains. It is fun teaching people and let them experience what I've learned in 40 years of running around in the woods.

If anyone goes, please take a small caliber and be well practiced to drop some bombs on those guys. I believe Spomer and JVB are stakeholders in that.

Easy to hunt every year if you put in the time researching and making a plan. I've had elk tags 5/5 years and only one was otc. I could have had one this year too, but just took the kids with their tags.

If you've already hunted whitetail and turkey in the midwest for 20 years, just go hunt... I'd save that money and take an extra week off work to hunt...

Since I posted this in August I have learned that onx has online classes to learn to use the service better. Ive also learned about some shooting classes I can do this summer in my area that dont require a week off of work and thousands of dollars. Those were 2 of the big things that processed based hunter provides. I feel like my confidence in my abilities and finding ways to improve them are growing. It is exciting to see where this will take me.
