I hunt better solo. No seconds thoughts, no one questioning my thinking. Not worrying about them making noise or stopping when I need to listen better.

But I do like deer hunting 'together' Meaning 2 or 3 guys in the same square mile. You know you cover it well, and if deer are bumped, you can give a heads up. We gather intel for each other, but are hunting individually.

Edit : oh and they can help drag or carry out meat when someone knocks one down.

I like a hunting partner where I go as to better my chances not to have to find out what the best cartridge is to stop a brown bear.

Good point; I try to avoid hunting solo in grizzly country—I do sometimes, but getting something down and processing it without an extra set of eye gives me the chills!

Good article and thanks for sharing. When one contemplates the profound development of humans from the plains of Africa to where we find ourselves today, I submit that hunting, the protein intake from its kills and the evolution of our communication strategies can be directly attributed to this activity.

99% of my hunts have been with others...I really enjoy everything that adds.

BUT!...I went solo this year for the first time on elk...and got my biggest bull yet. It was also a fantastic experience. Above all it made me feel like I unlocked a superpower in that I know I can always go alone if needed. My preference is to share hunting camps with others...but far better to go alone than sit out.

I love hunting alone. Its what I prefer, that and hunting with my son. It was a great idea until i killed a giant roosevelt elk a couple miles from my truck, in a wilderness area..... luckily I had an in reach and could get some help there in a few hours but it probably was not the best of ideas. I am far more successful when hunting alone and I just flat out love the solitude. That being said I also spend a great deal of time in a duck blind with good friends and will always cherish that.

I prefer to do the actual hunt (sit and glass and spot and stalk) alone but I like it when my dad and brother are hunting antelope or mule deer with me in the same general area. We can cover more ground being spread out or view the same drainage from different glassing spots. That way we can discuss what we see at the end of the day, more to help butcher animals we harvest, and after someone is successful they can still scout for the others. I like the mixed aspect the best!

When I moved west I started hunting alone because I had no friends to hunt with. I do enjoy my time out by myself but I do often think about how enjoyable it would be to share some of the experiences with someone.

Hunting alone keeps me from looking like an idiot to anybody else.
But really I don't have enough hunting friends that want to hang with me.

In the article, I was reminded by this: "Happiness is only real when shared."

BITD I soloed a [long] rock climb. I remember being completely in the zone and never relaxed.
It wasn't nearly as much fun as when I did it with a partner and three other pair of buddies the next year.
