Dumb question....ive got an.older dewalt skilsaw i need to put a new cord on. The cord on it only has two wires(no ground) im assuming it wont really matter if i just leave the ground loose or should i wire the ground to one of the housing screws or something?

I see no reason why the ground would matter. Personally I would leave it it off as that is the designed configuration. However, I'm just a home tinkerer, not an electrician, so take this with a large grain of salt.

If it is a double insulated tool, and it likely is, there will be no ground wire.
just get the best two prong plug you can find, not some cheap one made for a lamp.

Just order a replacement cord. Pretty cheap, and no issues with the plug. Frequently the add on plugs will wear out the wires faster.

Like $15 for a replacement cord. Hard to piece meal something together cheaper than that

^this regarding it being a double-insulated tool.
I’d recommend getting a replacement from Dewalt if it’s on $15. Otherwise, whatever you replace the original with will probably wear out pretty quick.

As for fixing that cord (IF you’re keepin it for yourself) just get a couple of crimp-on butt connectors. Make sure you have the wires cut cleanly and evenly and strip just a bit of the insulation. Crimp on the butt connectors and then wrap the repair well with electrical tape. It’s easy and takes 5 minutes. My saw has a couple of those repairs from the past 10-12 years.

IF you’re gonna repair it for your boss, get a brand new cord from the manufacturer and return the saw back to what he loaned you. If he needed to loan you the saw because you don’t have one... I’d be buying him a new one!!

Good luck!

Twist those wires back together and tape em up. If you wanna be really church, use whatever marretts you find in the dirt or near a sparky's bag.

I've been working construction for 20 years and was a GC for 6. Don't buy your boss a new saw, just fix the damn cord and don't make a habit of cutting cords.

Better the cord than your finger. Been there, done that, spent 4 weeks in a cast as a result.

I had a board pinch on a kerf cutting bit in a router, ended up cutting my left thumb half off with it. Extensive nerve damage. I still can't feel part of it. I spent 6 weeks off work, then went back on light duty. Naturally that lasted all of a week and I went back to doing trim. I was carefully cutting a notch with a Japanese pull saw, and talking to my journeyman when he starts yelling "whoa whoa whoa!"
I had started to cut into my thumbnail. So much nerve and tendon damage I didn't notice I was about to cut the tip off my thumb with a handsaw!

i picked it up at an estate sale with end of cord gone. and a replacement cord with it. but replacement cord is the Ground three prong type. that's what generated the question. sounds like just leave it loose and it would work fine
