I don't see where I can vote for the actual best cartridge, the one and only greatest ever .270 Win

Because it's not what's best. It's which of those that he already owns should he keep.

Level set with everyone. This is not a best cartridge of your choice I am asking. I am asking about the cartridges I own because I am looking at downsizing. I mainly hunt ground blinds and tree stands in NC, where field shots can be to 300 or further. I still have it in my mind to do one elk and mule deer hunt for my late son, before I can't. Which is rolling in close with my health issues. I am not looking to buy another cartridge or build another rifle. Thanks.

I'm partial to the 7-08, but the 6.5cm is basically the same thing, especially at those ranges and will have slightly less recoil.

Suppress either of those and go hunt anything you listed.

Given that they're all so capable...did your son think any one of them or one of those rifles was particularly awesome?

Thanks. I have this poll and the same on Hunttalk and 6.5 CM seems to be ruling the day so far and it does not hurt my feelings. I have a Bergara B-14 Square Crest and absolutely love that little rifle. Super accurate with 130 TGKs over H-4350.

I did not have any of those when he was here. I had a Savage 111 in 6.5 CM he killed a doe with the last time we went out. I gave that rifle to his best friend and wife, as I know it will be handed down to their little girls. I don't have anyone else to leave anything to.

I’d go all in on 6.5 creed.
39.0gr Varget with 123gr sst/eldm hits 2700 out of my 18” barrel. Minimal recoil. Devastating out to 500yds.

And plenty of room to go hotter when you finally get your elk hunt (not that you’d need to).

7mm-08 would be my choice but I have never owned or shot a 6.5CM. Either is a great choice I’d say…

Like others have said, the 6.5CM will probably have the least recoil...if it shoots well run with that.

Whatever you choose, I would strongly consider getting a suppressor as it will make all of those cartridges more pleasant to shoot.

I have access to 4/5 of the options, and I own 2/5, but my vote is on the 7mm-08. My .280 Ackley in a Weatherby mark V has quickly become one of if not my favorite rifles, but I couldn't recommend it to someone in your situation. It's a little bit too much of a niche cartridge for your described purposes in my opinion. I killed my first dozen or so deer with an "old" Savage 7mm-08. (pre accu-trigger). Used and still use a number of different loads for it. Performance was always fair to good. The 7mm-08 absolutely beats out at slightly extended ranges over the .308. Had you said you were strictly hunting Eastern Whitetails inside 300 yards, my vote would've been on the .308 all day long.

The 6.5 Creedmoor should get honorable mention here, too. It's a handy little cartridge. My sister knocked down the biggest whitetail anyone in the family ever killed with her little Creedmoor at 300 yards. No kicks or anything, just piled up.
