I used to be one of the naysayers.... But then I drew Colorado Archery Ram tag this year with zero weighted points at 26 years old. The odds are crap no matter where you apply (for the record, I apply in CO, AZ, NV, ID, UT... and will likely add NM and MT next year). But the saying is true, you can't draw if you don't apply.

It is my form of gambling for the year. And it paid off early.

Im not going to do the math, but that application strategy must be 2k a yr or more. In 10-11 yrs don't you have an Alaskan or BC sheep hunt?

I apply in Arizona and adding Neveda next year. I'm in (or getting in) for elk and mule deer, so I just add sheep to the mix.

My plan is to buy a dall and mountain goat hunt one day though. Even if I drew one of those sheep tags above, I'd still look at a guide to help out on it.

I was almost ready to book a BC goat hunt here a few months ago, but had some home remodaling eat up a good chunk of my savings for it.

I haven't added it up. I already buy the AZ UT and NV licenses for Elk/Deer apps so cost is minimal to tack on another animal there. CO and ID are large sums up front but reasonable on what they keep when you don't draw. Same story for NM. I think MT costs 50 a year for the point but I admittedly haven't looked into it there.

Sure it costs a lot, and mathematically doesn't make sense to play the game.... except for cases like mine. I drew CO this fall when I shouldn't have. If I didn't write that $2100 check, that wouldn't have been possible.

As for the AK or BC sheep hunt, I didn't like the thought of saving up $25k to hand over to someone for a hunt.... So I just moved here :). I can hunt Dall sheep annually for the cost of the fuel/flight to get to them.

Haha! Damn man, I was on my phone, so I couldnt see your location.

I have been researching Sheep hunting and I am definitely jealous of what it costs AK residents to fly into Sheep country versus how much it will cost me to hunt them!

I live in AZ so I apply in AZ and I apply in WY so I buy a point there, but it seems like WY might be a lost cause. I was looking for a more realistic state to try to draw in, but it seems like handing over 20k might end up being better in the long run, unfortunately.

Just had s job interview today since I'm fixing to graduate, the company said they are trying to expand to the north (Montana being their example) and said transferring may be a real possibility if I want. This may be the best news I've had for my sheep dreams

I also drew a CO archery bighorn this year and shouldn't have - I only had 3 points. There is no way anyone should be fronting the money for their apps - I use an application service and will gladly pay $100ish/app to front the application fees. I apply in almost every western state for a variety of species, so I find great value in it. And, I have a person to chat with when I'm trying to find the better units to put in for. I have respect for you for wanting to save the money and move up there to hunt - I bet that makes it all the more exciting. I just don't have the time and am willing to pay to play when it comes to sheep hunting...it's my addiction

My strategy is toward being drawn in AZ before I'm too old to hunt, and consists of applying every year, or at least buying a point. :)

I have 19 points going into this year's draw, and harbor no illusion that I will actually get a tag. I am starting to study the harvest data a bit more thoroughly before applying though. I have not actually crunched the numbers, so maybe my odds are better than I think...

Note... Some units have better odds for non residents than others, just keep that in mind 👍😉
