OK, so I am close to retirement from the Navy after 35 years of this boat club. I am trying to plan hunts in numerous different western states. I am from Colorado and understand their draw system etc. I have 19pp for elk, which I am saving for unit 201. Two years ago, I traded in 18 for mule deer in area 2. Shot a decent buck, but it was more of a hunt with my aging (84) father-n-law who has cancer.

The questions is, I have used ON-x for hunting and love it. I didn't renew it because I have been out to sea during seasons the last two years. However, I heard that they have something new on there that will tell you draw odds etc. What I don't want to do is purchase GoHunt and ON-x for just researching. I am looking to just try and figure out how to see what it would take for all of the western and midwestern states for Mule deer etc.

I'd say go hunt is a better research tool. They have a mapping app. I let my son use it, but I started using OnX before I had GoHunt and I'm too used to OnXmaps to convert so I pay for both.
I can't really say OnX is a better map tool, just different. It has some features that GoHunt doesn't like the view shed in beta. But Gohunt has the altitude layers. If I do use Gohunt for something like the altitude layers, I do it on desktop and move my points to onx.

I was very impressed with OnX when I used it a couple of years ago. I was way back in the wilderness in an old burnt out area. The trail that ran through there was long gone, but it kept me and my buddies on track for seven miles with no signal. That in itself was awesome. Secondly, I loved being able to find a spot when deer hunting and use their measuring tool for shot distances. I shot my buck at 384 per my range finder, and the onx was spot on. Mainly, I was wondering about the new feature for determining on getting a tag in different states. Being Military, they both have a discount through GovX. I don't mind buying both of them, I just figured if ONx was around the same as Gohunt, I would just stick with that. Currently, I don't have either. But, I will have OnX for sure when I am in the field.

OnX partnered with Toprut for their draw statistics.

Toprut provides a few bar graph charts and some basic statistics compilation.

GoHunt is a much better research tool, even if some of their info is "cut/paste."
