Hi all, I am planning in hunting western wyoming next year for mule deer. I plan to backpack hunt, are there any special considerations to backpack hunt in grizzly country? Also how are the mule deer recovering from winter kill from a few years ago?

Well since 80% of the western herd died recovery has been a very slow process. If you have enough points for G I’d suggest using them somewhere else. You could just go for it. It’s beautiful country. But do NOT get your hopes up to kill a big buck. If that’s your priority look east.

As far as backpacking… a good tactic. You are wise to spend your time at higher elevations. Unlike elk hunting mulies from a base camp isn’t the most productive method. To do that you would need horses. Hiking to deer country from the road every day would beat you up.

Regardless of anticipation, taking a good mulie, four point, can and will be difficult. The species have been inundated. Too many have taken small bucks not allowing them to grow to breeding age. CWD has been a problem of late. But, there are pockets. You need to hunt hard. Don’t get your hopes up to take a trophy mule deer.

Would you wait for the deer herd to recover before applying or just apply and hunt hard??

I would do what you decide. I cannot read one’s desire to hunt. There are good mule deer in old Mexico. But, quite pricey. Then there is Canada. I have seen some monsters in Alberta. Nothing I want, but very nice. Europe has very attractive red deer. New Zealand has monster red deer. Save and plan an adventure. MTG

Totally, everyone has different hunting wants etc. Me personally would rather grind it out on public land, no guide, no trespass fees etc.

How many grizzlies would it be common to see/encounter on a 10 day hunt in the western regions of wyoming?
I've only hunted there one time and didn't any Grizzlies or any signs of them. A friend if mine whi lives there has had several run inns in a particular area in G. He sees them whenever he goes on there and actually had to kill one years ago when it came in to his kill while he was on it. For whatever reason, the particular basin he was in always has Grizzlies. Since the incident when he killed the grizzly, he hasn't gone back in to my knowledge.

I'm used to black bears. They are more entertaining than anything. But if I were in Grizzly country, I would always carry a pistol during archery and I probably would still put in earplugs at night.

Depends on where you are. Many parts of western WY are far over their natural carrying capacity of grizzlies, and more importantly, the bears there have very little fear of humans.

This past fall was a real one, go down the google rabbit hole on all the attacks that happened. I hunted an area very close to this one days after dude man got chewed on, and ran into two cubs about 50 yards away in thick timber- the exact same scenario that got that guy attacked. If you don't have a good base of experience in bear country, I personally would not recommend being out there by yourself.
