Planning a once in a lifetime sheep hunt

Maybe take a trip to Sheep Show or Western Hunt Expo and talk with several outfitters to make sure you get the experience you want.

You probably could take your own food. Especially if you had food allergies.

My sheep hunt has been my only guided hunt. What I learned while researching and in my experience the outfitter is usually prepared to supply all food once you arrive at the outfitter's location/base of operation, until you leave to go home.
I took along some snacks that I enjoy while hunting but did not take any other food items.

As you talk to outfitters, definitely ask them about food on the hunt

Can you bring your own freeze dried and other foods with you on these hunts? I’d like to avoid being sick from peak fuels. It would suck to spook a ram because I couldn’t hold my farts in.

Yeah you’d be fine bringing your own food, just realize it’s a choose your own adventure situation. If you pack light and run out it’ll be on you.

I think this a great thing to talk to outfitter/guide about. They do this day in day out for the most part and have it dialed in pretty good on what works for the majority of hunters. I brought a lot of my own food just because I knew what worked for me. Everyone else in my camp ate what the outfitter provided and didn’t hear any complaints.

Go on some local backpacking trips and try out peak, mountain house, etc and all of your other gear. Such an easy way to remove the variable. Cheap insurance to find out if you love or hate backpacking and also what food and gear works. I shaved well over 5 pounds of “lightweight” gear doing this. It also made me swap some stuff out. When it came time for my hunt I didn’t have a single thought or question about my gear; everything was dialed in and fit etc. Made the hunt much more enjoyable because I wasn’t stressing or questioning that component.


I’m pumped for you. Having the wife on board is probably the biggest obstacle. If you’re worried about committing that cost before even having an idea if you’d like it, go on a backpacking trip out west. You’ll get a decent idea.

Yeah I’m sure you’d be fine bringing your own food, I’d talk to the outfitter and let him know you’d like to provide your own stuff. Which outfitters have you been researching?
