I'm going to have to break down and carry a pillow. I spend 1/2 the night waking up to refold my coat or whatever I stuffed under my head. Pain in the ass. Anybody have something that would stay in place on an Air Core? I use a quilt, so no way to stuff the head of a bag. Thinking I might have to use straps similar to the ones to hold the quilt in place...

ideas?

Exped has strap loops; I have one and it's nice but it is a little slick. I like my S2S Aeros which has a fleece cover and therefore not slick at all, but still might slip on an air core unless you put some silicone on the pad to keep it in place.

I also use a quilt and sleep on an Xtherm, been using a HMG large stuff pillow without any issues. I suppose if there was an issue with it slipping, I might try to permanently fix/glue Velcro to them. Anyway, just another idea.

I sewed up some zippered flannel "pillow bags". That way I can stuff my coat/vest/misc gear inside and get it to stay rolled up and comfy. I am prone to neck issues, so having a pillow of the proper height and firmness is essential to me sleeping well in the back country.

I'm in the same boat, just never could get good sleep stuffing things under my head. I tried the air pillows and they were worse. I use a thermarest down pillow.

One thing you might do is take that coat you've been sleeping on & maybe some other clothes & pile them around your pillow in such a way that the pillow cant move around much. Works for me.

I carry a small fleece camping pillow case, which was intended for an air pillow, but I just fill it with clothes. Works great. Keeps everything in place and much better than rolling up a coat, etc.

Id like a pad with a top section that could be inflated, folded over, and attached to the pad as a pillow.

I'm in the wrong damn business.

I have been using the cocoon inflatable with the fleece on one side. I am down to about 30% mobility in my neck, so this has also been a huge struggle for me. I use it in a bag, but I thought the approach noted here would be simple enough to keep everything in its place. I put my REI inflatable seat under it and deflate the pillow slightly to get "just right".

I'm going to try that pillow case idea. I don't know why I didn't think of that before.

I used to do this until one night it was so cold that I was wearing everything I had with me (heavy freeze in July, ice in my platty, when I brought a 40deg bag) and had to go with no pillow. 2 of the most uncomfortable nights in the woods that I have ever had. If you're doing this for weight it really doesn't make a huge difference because it's a 2oz pillow case or a 3oz inflatable pillow. I know plenty of people actually care about that oz so to each their own, but IMO there are plenty of other places to save weight.

This is a good idea and it'd be interesting to see if it would actually work in practice. My guess is that the weight you would need to add to the pad would be greater than the 3oz an inflatable pillow weighs.

I didn't read through this whole thread but you could just bring a pillow case then stuff it at night? I use a Thermarest case with my FL puffy in it..

Heck, just a larger chamber would do it. Kinda like this $4 pool floats that last about a day.

now how many of you have to use something between your knees, ?
that is a new one for me but I guess that comes with age. So i use the same pillow case concept.

Sea to summit ultralight pillow for me. I used to use a flannel pillow case stuffed with clothes, but I got sick of a lumpy, ever changing pillow. Love the Sea to summit pillow; my only complaint is since the pillow isn't attached, the pillow floats around the sleeping bag. Usually is kept in the hood of my mummy bag.

I have a Thermarest Neo Air pillow. Weighs just a few ounces. I don't think they make it anymore but you can still find that online through different sites or amazon.

I'll use the pillow by itself or if I want a little more from it I'll wrap my puffy jacket around it. I like the firm support it gives.
