Yeah, it wasn’t the most enjoyable ride out. The worst part was all the aspens that snapped and were on the trail from the weight of the snow. We had to stop and cut 20 or 30 trees off the trail to get through. Luckily they were small 4” to 8” trees but it still took 2 hours longer than it should have to getout.

No, luckily we didn’t have any break directly over us, but it was sure nerve racking listening to trees snap within hearing distance of us while we were all stationary clearing a tree. I was leading the way out on my good bay horse with my three mules behind me, then my cousin, a buddy of mine from OK, another cousin, and another friend of mine with two pack horses behind him. I didn’t see it but they said a tree fell between the two guys in the back, they said there was about 20 yds between the two of them and the top of an aspen snapped and came down right in between them. I guess it was a small one and they were able to get over it.

The snow really screwed up our hunt. We were in elk for three days straight prior to the snow and called in multiple bulls and had some good opportunities to kill elk but just couldn’t connect. I missed a nice bull from 52 yds on the first day. I guess I got target panic and I shot right over his back, probably gave him a little bit of a hair cut lol.. The following two days we had bulls bugling and had a few coming in good but the wind wouldn’t stay consistent to save our lives. It was a very fun but very frustrating hunt. Planned for months and took a lot of time and effort to put all this together and could’ve never imagined we would get hit with 2 feet of snow.

oh well, we had fun and it’s a trip none of us will ever forget!

Packed into Cold River in the Adirondacks last weekend. 13 miles from the trailhead. We left from Corey's road just outside of Tupper Lake. Scouting area for snowshoe hare hunting with the beagles in a few weeks. Two guys used hammocks, I used the lean-to.
Yes, the load looks lop sided, but it is the way the top sleeping bag is not centered. The weight distribution was not an issue at all. We are very careful about that not to sore the horse

on a morning like that i was saddling up. got camp packed and was lashing it to a white mule. when we heard a small crack that got louder and louder and it was in the top of the tree the mule was tied to. the mule knew it too. she tried to hunker down just before the final snap off. she was all tucked up and standing spraddled out as snow began to rain down and then a big branch hit right on top of the pack. her neck and withers were instantly covered in red.

what turned out to be a red shirt that blew out of the pack. i though she was a goner.

The pictures of llamas are interesting, the pictures of horses are nice but the pictures of mules are beautiful. If riders did a hunt on mules they probably wouldn't get on a horse again. Lol. They are intelligent and like sitting in a rocking chair. Did I mention they're also beautiful.

Buddy got on elk and chased them all over until he finally got one down 11 miles from our base camp. Quartered and hung in a tree over night until we could get back the next day with the horses.
