I've given a lot of people rides. There really is a spectrum to the kind of people you'll meet. I always try to keep them talking so they don't get any bad ideas.

The weirdest one I picked up; told me his family was influential in WWII, so the government implanted a device into his brain, so that if he was ever poisoned, this device would counteract the poison. He went on to tell me that because of this device he could only eat hot dogs and drink Coca-Cola.

Mighta had a drivers license for a week. I'm headed into town and see a pair of cut offs walking down the road with her thumb out....OOOOHH YEA!!! ..........That tweaker chick was in my pickup before I knew what was up LOL. Wouldnt get out either, had to drop her off at the tavern to get rid of her.

Also found a guy damn near dragging his bow down the side of the hiway, a long ways away from cell service. He was pretty twisted up in where he thought he was. Took a bit of driving to get him back to his pickup.

I do regularly where I live. Most are PCT hikers looking to skip part of the trail or needing a ride to the post office to pick up some of their stuff.

Have had some awesome conversations and met some really cool people.

The only people statistically weirder than hitchhikers are the people who pick them up. My observations. I've hitchhiked probably 5 times. 1 time was strange, 2 times were beyond strange. Some funny stories.

My friends dad used to hitch hike from Norfolk to Ohio when he was in the navy. Truckers would always pick him up. He didnt want to spend money on a bus ticket.
He said the truckers would either say nothing or not shut up. No in between

My uncle went to college on his GI in Mexico City after Vietnam.
He wanted to teach English and high school foreign language.
He used to hitch hike to the beach all the time.
4 hour ride one way.

I’ve only done it a couple times, and it wasn’t people actually with their thumb in the air.

My plant is on a road with several other large plants. You can tell who the factory workers are because they’re all carrying their giant lunch boxes. We get a couple days per year below 0 so if I see one of them walking (nearest houses are over a mile away) and there is a safe place to pull over, I’ll offer. Don’t tell my wife.

…I will pull over and help people stuck in the snow if it is safe, have helped people change tires when I could tell they were struggling, and have jumped many dead cars or did the hammer to the starter trick to get people going.
