Photography- one photo a day

Any advice is appreciated, good advice even more so…. So thanks! Taking a bunch of pictures was the starting plan, a used mirrorless camera with a couple lenses from an online yard sale the day before a trip to Yellowstone. Now I’m going down the rabbit hole and have no care to stop.

After looking through all the sunset pics I tried to get last night, this ended up being better. I learned today that sunsets can be difficult.
Sunsets aren't that difficult. The key is choosing what you want visible & then knowing how to meter it if you're trying to shoot on auto exposure. If you include foreground (landscape elements) & meter it as an average, you're going to get an average image with neither the foreground or the sky properly exposed. Usually the sky will be overexposed & the foreground will be underexposed but not enough. When I want the sunset itself to be the main focus, I spot read the sky & lock in the exposure. Then I compose the scene and shoot. That usually results in deeper colors for the sky while most of the foreground goes black.

This is a really old, not so good scan of a 35mm slide, but it gets the concept across. It was taken at about midnight in the Yukon.

Speaking of "down the rabbit hole"...... Asking Alice when she's 10' tall is no longer necessary, ask Alexa or Siri instead....... Not to mention that Google is your friend, as is youtube. It is amazing the wealth of information that can be had by accessing those platforms. ya!

A good camera gives you the option of optical zoom, but a little bit of patience and practice, and a phone camera can do the job on sunsets. The first one was with auto mode and I adjusted exposure and color after the fact. The remaining 3 were with pro mode, so I adjusted shutter speed, iso, and color temperature to best portray the seen.
