Peep sight string frayed

Just noticed this fraying today. Not sure what happened (no burrs on my peep). This is a Zebra string on my month old Phase 4. Hard to tell if one of the strands is compromised, but I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone thinks it's a big deal or not.

Should I wax this or does it look like it needs to be replaced already?

Trim it off short with a razor blade, put some wax on it and call it a day.

Keep that razor away! Take a lighter, put it ABOVE the string and lower until you just start to see the fibers retracting.

That being said, I’d take it to a shop and see what there thoughts are. 1. Is it an issue? 2. Is there something causing it, like a burr on the peep.

Last thing you want is that to give out at full draw, or 3/4 and knock out a tooth.

Lately I have seen a lot of issues with peep and string damage. I have gone to installing a peep with serving between it and the string bundle. Both Hamskea and Specialty archery have videos on 2 different methods of accomplishing it.

Might it it's served a little too close to the peep also, can't really tell from the pictures.

You could probably use some serving or braided fishing line and tie it in place with the hamskea method, then remove the serving above and below.


If you start getting peep rotation that's a sign of string creep and I'd go ahead and put a new string on.

Thanks for the replies! I drove to the archery shop and had them look at it. They said it was fine and recommended that I wax it down or cinge it with a flame. I picked up a complete set of strings though and a Stay Afield cord just to have.

I've seen a couple of those videos on tying peep sight servings. I'm highly motivated to do this with my peep sight! I remember hearing one of them say to use bees wax to retail string compression while wrapping them, but I'll have to watch them all again and figure out what seeing to get.

Now the Threadz string I installed recently, that peep has not shifted from after 320 shots and it was installed in a string that was never shot prior to installing.

My advice is to break your factory string in and replace it with a better aftermarket string now. That way you’ll have a back-up ready to go if something happens to your primary string this fall. It can be difficult, if not impossible, to get a string quickly during the season.

The best Zebra string is one in the trash can. Sorry man, they are junk. Looks like your bow mechanic nicked the string with a razor blade while tying in the peep. But…. He did you a favor. Matthews should be ashamed at using them. They make a great bow, never understood why they put crap strings on them. Every Matthews I’ve ever owned never even left the shop without a new aftermarket string. I suggest you upgrade. You’ll be happier in the long run.

I’ll also say this. Don’t install a peep without pressing your bow! That’s a great way to damage the string!

Which aftermarket strings do you recommend?

Lots of aftermarket. Stay away from winners choice, vapor trail and even americas best.

If you need a shop to install them you might ask them who they use, if they make their own that’s probably ok too. I’ll send you a PM with the guy I used on my last set. Dirt cheap and they were great!

The factory zebra strings/cables on the switch weight bows are BCY 8125. It's not a bad fiber, but it's sensitive to heat. It's not ideal for a hunting bow. I have been able to put a good number of shots on them (several k) without movement, but one time of them getting warm and everything moves.

I think best material is 452x. Several string companies use blends, I like straight 452x. The Zebra Trophy strings (factory on the TRX target bows) are 452x. I have put over 15k shots on several sets with no movement after the initial 20-25 shots. I have seen several sets of what are supposed to be the most stable whatever material this or that company uses creep, in my book 452x from a reputable company is the way to go.

I recently put GAS stings on my bow too. Settled in quick after just a couple dozen shots and haven’t moved since.

It's a little frayed, but fine to shoot. Fix it with a lighter and some wax as previously instructed. Looks like somebody slid the peep on the string without pressing the bow. You also need a few wraps around the peep groove to keep it secure in the string! Not a great installation job honestly.
