I would buy that if it was universally true, but lots of assholes are well liked, that may be the blanket some use to hide their true reasons
That's why I don't like him haha

Nothing against his determination to push limits of humanity and Tesla in itself though

That’s a very interesting study.

Are natural fibers like cotton and wool ever studied in a similar way? Can’t say I ever heard about the great ocean cotton patch..
I'm not sure that wool or cotton are being found in 800 foot deep water wells . We are going to start hearing a lot more on microplastics and PFAS as they have turned up in a scary amount of potable water systems.

I don’t find alignment with all of Chouinard’s positions, or those of his company, but his commitment to the outdoors and the natural environment is unquestionable. Giving away a $3 billion company is more “putting your money where your mouth is” than most can ever even conceive of.

Respect.

Smart investment, humans have got to take control before it's to late

I’m old enough to remember how many different emergencies were going to wipe out civilization, the coming ice age, acid rain, the hole in the ozone, rising sea levels and if I think about it long enough I’m sure there are several more I’ve forgotten. Now global warming has been switched to climate change because they couldn’t keep manipulating the data to back up the warming claims. The same people barking the loudest about this are all flying their private planes and hanging out in tropical locations with all their billionaire buddies each in a 100’ plus yachts still claim the oceans are going to swallow up huge land masses from rising water, yet they have all continue to buy waterfront properties on private beaches around the globe. These same people powered by the WEF have now started saying they are going to push to eliminate private vehicle ownership to make everyone own up to our person carbon credit allowance.

Disagree. History shows that Earth's climate has always been in a state of change. We DO NOT have and WILL NEVER have our fingers on the Earth's thermostat.
Yes... I should have added "Man Made climate change is a hoax." It's the perfect "problem" for those who suck off the big government teat. It can never be "solved" in a definable way; therefore, the issue will always be around & that's much more important than actually finding a solution.
And it just so happens that their "solution" always involves taking our money and exerting more & more control over our lives.
For the record this isn't a political statement because there's tons of people on both sides of the aisle that harp on it. All while flying around on their private jets & driving those big SUV's. You know, the same SUV's that melted away the last ice age.

Well said and exactly how I feel. It always boils down to, if you can sacrifice a little more and give us more money and control, we can get this solved.

A man by the name of Patrick Beck David, some of you may be familiar with him. Has gone around to people on both sides of the argument to compile as much data as possible, he has even used his own $$$ to attempt a collaboration of individuals to put out the most accurate information and data known to man. He has done this effectively in other areas of study along with trump and Obama, but like most of these situations only one side agrees to show up….. unfortunately for him, it’s statistically been the side that I would think most of us fall into. There are several videos of him asking questions only a handful of us could compose and then stating the findings of the data to answer those questions. Imo the human race has effected the climate, but to what degree and for what everlasting effects? I do not know. It may only be accelerating the change by 5 minutes or it could be 20years, exc. It is all unknown, there is no known variable or rate. So everything is hearsay. I find it to be unfortunate to see the lack of discussion in todays world, as that means we are growing far less and echoing far more.

Climate Change (real or not, it’s irrelevant) is THE perfect model of a social mass movement as described in Eric Hoffer’s True Believer.

You have a perceived existential threat that is brought to light by fanatics who convince the frustrated (those whose life is devoid of purpose) to join the cause in saving everyone from the threat. In joining a cause bigger than themselves, they now have a purpose to dedicate their lives. Fanatics at the top do not have the solution to the problem, as a matter of fact there IS NO solution - there is only the HOPE of a solution by the sacrifice and “work” done by the frustrated. The fanatics employ middlemen to act as agents on their behalf (that of the cause), to keep the frustrated motivated and in service of the fanatic. All the while, the fanatic gains money and power, the latter of which is more important.

The threat can never be extinguished, if it is, the grift is up and the movement falls apart.

As Hoffer said: All movements begin as a cause, become a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.

You can apply this model to many different causes, you only need to look for the persistent existential threat, the fanatic promising a solution, and a mass of frustrated people willing to do the “work.” When you know the structure of these movements, you see them everywhere:

Climate Change
BLM
NRA
Save XyZ animal
Public Lands
Democrats
Republicans
Abortion
MeToo

Etc, etc, etc…

Its interesting to see when hot or cold temperature records are broken, how often those records are from 50-60...90+ years ago. So your saying it got to 104 in Dallas, Tx on August 10, 1921, and we just now broke that record at 105. I just made that example up, but you see similar scenarios all the time. The point is it got damn hot in the summer a long time ago as well.
To be fair it does seem like certain areas are breaking records with increased frequency in the last couple decades, but we've had outlier weather extremes forever.
By the way where are all the hurricanes this year, we should have had about 9 or 10 of them at category 5 by now if you listen to all the doom and gloomers.

Maybe people in the lesser 48 dont notice climate change since all your glaciers are gone and what not. But up here in ak you dont have too look to far to see that things are changing "quick" relatively speaking. Especially when you go out to coastal villages and talk to some of the older natives. If you're ever in seward, go to exit glacier and you will see how fast things are moving. Theres glaciers you use to be able to see from the highway that are now receded back behind mountains that happened just in the passed 10 years.

And it's happened in cycles over millennia... again and again. Long before man was on the scene. Keep buying that man can stop it.

Hoffer's books are fascinating, everyone should read them. I appreciate that you have applied this lens equally across the spectrum in your post as well. Our current political system revolves around the idea of whipping the masses into a frenzy about ... SOMETHING BAD IS GOING TO HAPPEN! While those at the top consolidate power, money and resources for themselves. Thanks for bringing this to the discussion.

Too little too late. In 12 years we’re all going to die. In the mean time I’m waiting for the real estate market to decline enough so I can buy a beach house on the Gulf in Florida.

Canada used to be a tropical rain forest. Think about that.
Global colding is the real issue 😉

Yeah man. My uncle gave me that book when I was 13. I also think everyone should read it. It’s so simple, but very powerful.

And yes, it is equally applicable across all spectrums of politics and beliefs. Being able to see how things work has made me very critical of any “cause.”

Glad I’m not alone in my high regard for Hoffer.

These threads always bring out the best in us. What a divisive group we have become. While it is in fact true that the earth as we understand it has always gone through cycles of change climatically; it’s also relevant to understand that billions of people living and extracting resources from it do have an effect.
Like I said before and frequently do, the earth is greatly over populated and bad things are happening. We got here 50, 60, 70 years ago when the red cross and other organizations traveled to the poorest, darkest, awful hell holes on earth and gave those people medicine, and taught them how to grow food and survive. They did start surving, but kept having big families, mostly for survival. This is the reason for over population. My relatives did this in Minnesota. My Norwegian great grandad had 8 brothers and sisters and most died during childhood. It's incredibly rare for any of my relatives having more than 2 kids in the last 80 years!! These poor countries are still having huge populations. The Catholic Church is also greatly responsible for the world's suffering and misery, claiming every sperm is sacred.
