Back in 12/2015 I used Pac-nor’s online ordering process to purchase a #1 stainless super select match grade barrel in 30cal with a 1-10” twist. I received it in 2/16 and took the barrel (unopened) along with my other parts: rem 700 Ti saum action, McMillan Hunters Edge stock, Shilen trigger, PTG black anodized aluminum bottom metal to my smith to build me an ultra-light 300wsm. My calculations said that these parts should finish up sub 6.5#. Shortly after dropping my parts off I had a fall from about 20’ (taking stands down) and was unable to work/drive for 12 weeks. I called my smith and asked him to shelve my project until I was back to work. I called him again around the 1st of June and asked him to work it in. My smith works a full-time job and is pretty slow in general but he does great work. Right about December he called and said it was done and I owed him $500 for glass bedding, trigger adjustment, thread-chamber-crown at 23.5” barrel, and squaring action and bead blast. When I picked up the gun I thought it seemed heavier than I expected but I was preoccupied that day since deer season was in and I have three kids who like to hunt so I just stuck it in the safe and forgot about it. About 1st of January I got it back out and put a scope on it and put it on the scales 6# 14.5oz. I can’t believe I was off that far so I grabbed my calipers and checked the muzzle diameter against the drawing for a #1. Mine was .645 and the #1 drawing said .600 at 24”. I was a little upset that I didn’t check the barrel when I got it but I still felt that this was Pac-nor’s error somehow and sent them an email to see if they would be willing to do anything even though it has been a year since I got the blank. After putting on my VX3 I have almost $3,500 into this project.
Email response from Pac-nor:
“I can see where the issue is. If you look at the invoice its say’s #1@28”. We bump into this every so often. When the order says #1@28 we move the .600 dia. to 28”, for most people this is what they want. In your case the order should have been for a #1@24 leave 28”. If you want to send it back, we would be glad to take a quick pass over it to get the dimensions you were looking for.”
My response:
"Is it possible to re-contour a finished barrel and will you guarantee accuracy after it is done? Are you willing to pay shipping both ways?
I'd rather be sent the correct barrel as a prefit and I can send this one back and you can sell it as a prefit. I went through the order process last night and you just pick the contour # and there is nothing about moving the contour from the drawing specs or picking where or what you want the muzzle diameter to be. This really had to be an internal mistake. The drawing clearly shows that a #1 is .6@24" and 24" is the blank length. A #1 moved to 28" isn't a number one it is a custom contour then. I just wanted a plain #1. I have about ~$3,200 into this rifle and I want to do it right. Please let me know what we can do to resolve this. I know it's been 12 months since I received this blank and I should have checked it but I assumed it to be correct as I've never had a barrel issue in the past."
They haven’t responded to this email. Do you think I should just eat this as my fault for not checking it sooner or should I send another email to them? I really do feel that we are both to blame: them for changing the contour and me for being so late to catch it. I have so much money in this gun and I really wish it was the 8oz lighter that I paid for. What do you think I should do?
