As much as I like the Sitka Kelvins, I sure wish somebody made a comparable set that went on over your clothes like raingear. If you just hiked 2 miles and gained 3000' in elevation before first light in sub-freezing temps, it would be nice to slap on some external insulation for your glassing session. I can always throw on a jacket or Doobie Express but finding some pants with insulation is a tougher issue. Has anyone found an insulative pant that quickly goes on over your hunting pants?

Kuiu down pants have zippers up the legs so you can get them on and off quick

Tried the Superdown jacket and froze my huevos off in So. Calif. in spring temps! No way. Need something comparable to the Kelvin line that can get wet and stay warm.

Sounds like you are looking for "pause puffies" "static layers" or "belay" style garments, there are many options for insulated garments meant to go on over your "active" layers (many just go up a size or two). I don't usually need a ton of insulation so I typically use the old USGI ECWCS liners, about 5oz of polarguard and similar loft to 100g primaloft. pretty loose fit can layer over almost anything I can move in. The pants do not have their own closures so they need at least a button sewn on, but the bottom cuffs are big enough to put on with most boots.

Newer option is the ECWCS/PCU level 7, 6oz primaloft and a fairly tough and water resistant epic shell and a very loose fit (probably not a bad idea to order down a size, even as an outer layer). The pants have full length side zips so are easy to throw on at a break. These are HEAVY and bulky layers to be sure, that kind of warmth doesn't come cheap.

Super cheap low-tech solution for leg warmth is the old ECWCS level 3 polartec bibs, 200g fleece, full side zips and usually around $10 from ebay or army surplus stores. probably the toughest and most moisture-resistant option.

I've had the 100g patagonia micropuff pants (the military version in the cool colors) but they were expensive and delicate so I sold them in favor of the cheap and easily replaced ECWCS liners.

I have a pair of Feathered Friends down pants that work awesome for what you're describing. They are warmer than the Kuiu down pants and I really like the company. They have full leg zips so you can throw them on over your boots in a snap and they pack up super small. I prefer carrying these over base layer pants because they are much warmer and I usually get too warm with base layers and sweat more when I'm hiking.

I have a pair of Kryptek kratos pants from camofire.com . I haven't used them yet but that's my game plan for them. Move with what I'm wearing and when I get to my stand throw them on over what I have. Get ready to move and dump them in my pack.

Okay well...it's clear i have a gearhoing problem because I just found a pair of Wild Things Extreme Cold Primaloft trousers in coyote that I don't recall purchasing. But when I attempted to contact the company to find out about the R rating of these pants I struck out. One number was disconnected, another just rang unanswered. These look like the product I need, fully zippered for external wear with a nylon shell but I sure would like to learn more about em before entrusting my life with em. Here's the same pants in a different size: Medium Regular USMC Extreme Cold Trousers Pants Primaloft Wild Things Weather | eBay

Anyone own these? Got an educated opinion?

Shacket, Fanatic vest and Jacket are all super quiet, warm outer layers from Sitka.

They look a lot like the army issue equivalent, remembering back they were quite thick atleast 100g primoloft maybe 120, I only used the jacket a few times in kunar, I think you'll survive in them lol.

I may have exaggerated a bit. Survival is not my real concern, just not shivvering while glassing in the cold late season. If it begins to look life-threatening I will retreat into the safety of a stove-heated tent and cot. <g>

I think the wild things pants actually have around 6oz of primaloft in them, pretty hefty as synthetics go.

My friend has those pants, you can also search them on ebay as the "happy suit" and similar. I've been meaning to get more info on them from him.

If they are anything like the older level 7 PCU stuff, they may be noisy/swishy. Military Morons Military Clothing Page 1

Do you know which model you have? I was planning to go with a cheaper alternative, but the buy once cry once thought keeps ringing in my ears. Quality and light weigh feel important to me. Otherwise they're more likely to stay in the car.

These are the pants that I have. I recommend sizing up one size to make them fit over your hunting pants better.
