OTC elk recommendations

I did OTC in Colorado in 2018. I made an oath I would never do it again. More orange than a pumpkin patch. Caught another hunter looking at me through his rifle scope... just a terrible experience. My advice..focus anywhere but CO!! Good luck

We hunt OTC when we can't draw a tag anywhere else. Usually don't have high expectations on those hunts. Just a time for the boys to get away, see some beautiful scenery, and have a good time. I have had OTC hunts where it was a bust all throughout the hunt and others where the opportunity was there whether or not we capitalized was mute point. You never know until you go. Have fun!!

I live in CO and I’m not sure it’s worth my time or $50 to get an OTC tag with as many hunters there are on those hunts. Yes getting experience hunting is nice, but out of state tags are expensive, so is travel and time away from work just to stare at other hunters. If going this route considering a guide would be a good idea, I know some local guys that are reasonably priced and have solid success rates too.

I would apply for a low point limited entry hunt in whichever state you choose. You will have a chance to hunt elk that are less pressured and have a better chance at learning what you need to hunt them effectively.

Buy tag and go just stay away from the wolves and you will have a chance that is all we can ask for be prepared have fun and learn on each trip otc units can still hold good animals you just have to find them good luck🤩👍DC1D3FCC-333D-4845-86FF-91A64818F781.jpeg04B4C0A1-D6B6-4357-B633-E3E4590411DD.jpegEB6D0188-7B33-49CC-AECE-5B3CCD72CACD.jpeg579EDF9B-7391-4A0D-8598-860641090165.jpeg530B6BBC-1310-4F1F-B29C-9E9ED6A4CECF.jpeg058501AC-577C-4872-95A2-5075A6E8D30C.jpeg78E2580E-1CE0-498B-8F5A-B0FC09A17CF2.jpeg

In my opinion the Montana general tag is an awesome tag and would be my first choice with lots of great areas to hunt across the state.Colorado and idaho will take more research to find a good spot but they are there and I have had high quality hunts in both states in several different otc units.I think for a first hunt a statewide general tag like Montana or Colorado is easier than trying to pick a zone in idaho without having been there before.

Sounds like these low point units are about to become a little higher point units with all your suggestions. I get wanting to give advice, but the initial question was rediculous and vague and you all jumped on it and told him exactly what you would do. Seems a little rediculous but what do I know, the more people putting into limited draws or hunting the same OTC state as me the better right!?
