My brother and I are first time elk hunters from Michigan. We have no points. Open to try Idaho, Montana or Colorado. Any recommendations? I know more than to get info on specific units. Any help is appreciated. Feel free to send a pm

So your looking for... Colorado is insane you should hunt here... Or Idaho is teeming with elk that's the best OTC state...?

Montana is draw. So you could apply there and if you draw it narrows down the state. If you don't draw then you have ID and CO to choose between. I would probably pick the closest state and focus there.

Good luck

Plan was Montana but not sure it’s worth it if we don’t draw a limited entry area. Colorado or Idaho would be backups

Ill narrow it down a little more. AVOID the panhandle of Idaho, NW Montana , and any OTC areas in CO. The first two have very few elk and latter will have hordes of people, including hikers if you go early season. Try for LE tag in any state to avoid OTC. Even if its just a cow tag.

If you are a first time elk hunter don't worry about limited entry hunts. Get a tag and go. Also, if you want to be a 2nd and 3rd time elk hunter it will help to maybe go back to the same OTC unit and learn it.

I agree with WCB. You're not likely to draw LE hunt the first time anyway. If you plan on hunting Elk in the future get yourself some preference points to up your prospects for the future of drawing a LE unit but for now hunt in a general season or OTC unit.

Thanks guys. I’ve found some areas that have a lot of what I’m looking for so I am hopeful

If ur budget allows it put for a premium hunt in New Mexico then meteoker hunt 2nd and 3rd choice so you atleast have a chance at the limited entry experience, then Fall back on otc , don’t overlook Oregon either , lot of elk get killed there ,

This is really good advice. Atleast put your name in the hat.

My advice is to go. Go with the idea you will be learning more than you have in a long time. It will be overwhelming.

Give yourself plenty of time. One week would be the minimum. 10 days to two weeks would be better.

Use OnX or something similar.

If you plan to backpack, go over the summer and get your system figured out.

Being in shape is important, but having a positive mindset and mental toughness is more important.

Take notes each day.

Keep tracks of your hikes.

Take lots of pictures.

I fought with my autocorrect for ten minutes to get it to let me type meteoker.
Being a former English teacher, this cracked me up. I don't know how many times I've read a typed paper and thought, "This person must be typing on a red background not to be able to see all the underlined words."

Thanks guys. I may put in for NM. More Interested in Idaho than before. Getting in the same page with another guy or two is the tough part

However it all works out with your buddies just remember there is no wrong answer so long as you're hunting and learning.
