Origin of the term "run"

Does anybody know when/why people started using the term “run” instead of “wear” or “use”, when talking about their equipment? For example, “I run Danner boots” or “I run Vortex binoculars”.

I'm not trying to be a grammar n*zi - I'm just genuinely curious if it’s just hunting/shooting bro speak, or if it evolved from somewhere.

Know? Nope. Guess it is!

Probably a mix between growing use of computer terms, like "running this OS/program" and the verb to run, as a synonym of to manage or to operate.

Instructor focus is more how you are operating your gear in class than what you brought, so "run your gun" could pretty easily roll into "what are you running?" Especially when all that jazz came into vogue shortly after GWOT kicked off.

Also thinking its a trucker phrase but not certain there.

For example, “I run Danner boots” or “I run Vortex binoculars”.

I run a lot of different boots hard and put them away wet.........except Danner Pronghorns. Worst boots I've ever had.........let alone ran in. I certainly wouldn't run bino's.........but will probably run "with" binos.

Maybe it's like the TV hunters that say "I smoked him".........that's not even possible, as they haven't even recovered him yet.

The over use of this term is out of control, it’s excessive use seems to be entirely unique to the hunting community and it’s application appears to have no boundaries. No item of gear is too insignificant to escape the use of “running”

“what brand of toilet paper is everyone running for backcounty hunts?”

“What shoe laces is everyone running for backcountry hunts?”

“What brand of tires are you guys running on your daily commute to your jobs so you can pay for you hunting trips?”

I grew up hunting in the Midwest for about 22 years before moving out to Utah. It wasn't until I got on the hunting forums and watched some hunting media that I was introduced to "running".

I also feel it's overused. Just about any sort of phrase or word that gains popularity and is overused drives me nuts. Like everyone calling everyone else "dude" over the last 3 years. I've heard way too many people even calling their children "dude".

I've always wondered about that too! You can run an engine, but run a duck call??? Or boots?
I think it's just a symptom of people's attempt to be cool on the internet. Like driving a "rig" instead of a truck. Around here, people put these "Salt Life" stickers on their auto windows. Apparently, it's not a brand, or a product, but just shorthand for "Maybe people will think I'm cool if I put this sticker on my window". Same phenomenon.

Me? I run trails, I'll stick to that.

But a politician can run for office. If the politician wins the presidential election then I suppose he can run the country, but if while running the country he eats gas station sushi he will certainly have the runs. Maybe he gets re-elected, we could say "he had a good run". But let's suppose he is really lazy and out of shape and did all of this running without ever actually running at all?

In some cases, I think it adds an implication of validity to a certain type of person.

Example:

Question: “what kind of meals is everyone running in the backcountry?” (Translation: im going to pretend that food isn’t highly personal, ask what everyone is eating but use the word run as signal that I’m an experienced hunter looking for advice from other experienced hunters”)

Answer: “we run MREs exclusively. Not having to cook or rehydrate meals means we have more time to hunt.” (Translation: the food that I eat is the clearly the best option because I use the the word run instead of eat, therefore my method is the most valid.”)

It’s absolutely not intrinsic to hunting. I see it in the climbing community, off road and overland, cars and pretty much anywhere highly gear intensive hobbies exist. You’re on the most gear intensive hunting community on the internet. Bound to happen.

I also believe it comes over from tech as a previous poster mentioned. Vernacular changes.

I asked my buddy this question and he believed that it came from the military (he served), or at least that they were using the term before he heard it used in hunting.
