What a waste. I see these sheep on I-84 everytime I drive back and forth to my hunting spots in Eastern Oregon. They are often just a few feet off the freeway, and some nice rams in the herd. My wife was actually on her way back from Pendleton yesterday and said she passed a bunch of cops in the Gorge that were looking for someone/something. Didn't know until this morning that it was these two idiots.

"Two men were arrested for poaching big horn sheep in Gilliam County, OR on Saturday.

Oregon State Police says they received a report of suspicious activity alongside I-84 milepost 119, east of Biggs Junction. The reporting party says it appeared a person was gutting a big game animal and was concerned it was a bighorn sheep.

OSP Patrol and Fish and Wildlife Troopers responded and located a vehicle in the area occupied by a male later identified as Justin Samora, 32, of Layton, Utah.

While troopers were speaking with Samora, passing motorists stopped and advised there was a male hiding in the brush just west of their location. While troopers were searching for the male, they discovered two severed bighorn sheep heads.

More OSP troopers responded to assist with the search. The other male, identified as Cody Plagmann, 28, of Troutdale, was found hiding along railroad tracks two miles to the east of the scene around 4 p.m.

Investigation revealed Plagmann and Samora had worked together to shoot and remove the heads of the bighorn sheep. Both bighorn sheep were recovered but were not able to be salvaged. Plagmann was arrested and lodged at Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility in The Dalles for Taking/Possession of Bighorn Sheep, Wasting of a Game Animal and Hunting on Another's Cultivated or Enclosed Land.

Samora was arrested for Aiding in a Game Violation and lodged at Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility in The Dalles.

"It's an outrage that someone would poach a bighorn sheep, when hunters can wait their whole life and still never get the opportunity to hunt this iconic species," said Jeremy Thompson, district wildlife biologist in The Dalles. "This herd is also a popular viewing attraction for people driving along I-84, and has been there since 1993."

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information is asked to call The Dalles Area Command at 541-296-9646. More information will be released when it becomes available as this is an ongoing investigation."

They are among the worst. Think of the thought process that one must go through to decide to poach a sheep like this. They should be put away for a long time.

Just like the article states, some people apply their whole lives and never draw a tag (50+ years). These inconsiderate individuals didn't pay a penny into the system for legal tags, license, and other fees and took two Rams out a unit that only gives out 3-4 tags a year. Unbelievable.

And what's worse is that the penalty for such acts doesn't care severe punishment for the crime, they'll probably incur legal fees and fines that they won't pay anyway. It's disgusting.

They must of been planning on doing European mounts, as they knew no legitimate taxidermist would touch the poached carcasses. More likely they didn't know what to do with the cape.

Let's base time in prison on the average time it takes to draw a tag, instead of the weak sentencing most poachers get.

This makes me sick! Love looking for those sheep as we head east, even plan our drive so we'll be going through in the day light just to see them. I've applied for May years and may or may not ever draw but dumb shits like this don't help anyone's odds.

To bad they can't hang em!!

They need to place legitimate consequences on these violations. That would start to deter a lot of the poachers. Right now they are taking away a privilege in most places that the poachers didn't use in the first place.

I think, in certain parts of Africa poachers are shot on site. Now I'm not sayin these two septic water sucking fools should be executed, but a lengthy prison term plus confiscation of EVERYTHING they own might deter someone who might be toying with the idea of poaching an animal. Maybe.

I saw another article on this event that had booking photos of the dudes. The OR guy is the owner of a pot retail business. Nice neck tats to boot.

this case reminds me of an older case here in Anchorage. A well known large one eyed ram seen frequently along the Seward Highway was poached. Sad greedy crap all around.

Yeah Chad, I too was driving back from Wallowa Co. and saw all the state game folks cleaning up the mess. Sure pisses a guy off. Hope the new law upping poaching fines applies.... $50k for each bighorn. Make em pick up pop cans along side our roads until they pay every penny back.
