The media deserves a lot of the blame for this, "Guns are bad" mentality.

They always profile kooks with guns shooting up shopping malls...but they NEVER report the millions of positive defensive firearms cases nationwide every year. Many of the good guys brandishing a firearm against a bad guy aren't even reported in this day and age where the cops won't even come out when your car is stolen, "File it online" in cities like Oakland,Ca.

Its no wonder these folks have no clue. Bad guys aren't buying their guns legally...thats only the good guys folks.

These folks don't know the truth that some of the areas with the strongest gun restrictions have the most gun crimes.

Mass killings; never mind that the ONE THING all of these folks have in common is not a gun [some do it with knives, cars, bombs ] ...they are all mentally ill. You gotta be to do something like that- no matter the weapon.

The Social media grifters of the world are complicit in this also.....its all about racking up "Likes" and increasing your fan base.....the Charles Posts of the world.

While this is the worst of the anti gun bills in Oregon, I do not think it will gain much traction. However there are several others that could easily pass and be very bad for gun owners.

I get your point, but what do you want them to do? CNN or any news outlet reporting every single positive firearm defense is not a realistic idea. The reality is that, mass shootings warrant national news coverage and your average citizen thwarting off a home robbery doesn't (beyond maybe a local level).

I agree with you 100 percent on mental illness being the main cause, therefor why should we oppose common sense gun regulations in regards to mental health?

There are federal laws preventing the mentally ill from possessing firearms. What further would make more common sense?

I appreciate what you are getting at, that said mental health is not that cut and dry of an issue. An extremely large percentage of the population could be interpreted as having some sort of mental health issue. All it takes is some legislation that allows for a loose definition of “mental health” and a large portion of the population.

Not everyone with a mental health issue is violent or a risk to themselves or others.

I do believe we have a mental health issue in this country. But we should put energy into helping those with mental issues and addressing root causes, not infringing on the rights of the legal right of law abiding citizens to own firearms.

When I lived in Seattle I saw how the two iniatives were passed: one for gun transfers and another for “endangered” species. Signatures were gathered by paid fools standing outside the grocery stores, the initiative made it to the ballot, and an uninformed public voted them in with no more understanding of the topic that a 3rd grader...this is democracy by mob. The initiative process can undermine freedoms very fast. And in my opinion should be severely curtailed as they are typically emotionally-driven, reactionary laws.
