Anyone have any tips on finding spring bear on the NW Oregon coast? Every podcast I can find focuses on areas with snow pack and following spring green up. Everything is green on the west side. What are you targeting for vegetation? Weather? Are you glassing big cuts or walking along thick bottoms? Also have heard conflicting messages from people who have been successful on spring bear on being out at zero dark 30 vs having breakfast in camp and strolling out. First time getting out for spring bear been out 4 times so far this season and haven’t stirred one up.

Right now, grassy meadows, creek bottoms old grassy roads. You will catch them in some clear cuts, I prefer to hunt cuts are are a few years old and not too open. In the next few weeks the guys will start roaming more

Thank you really appreciate the info!

I’m in a similar boat in the Alsea unit. Hearing a ton from coworkers who are far more experienced than me and even given some solid cuts to watch. A lot of people say that even now, drive around glassing cuts manly to look for the best sign (mainly recent ripped up stumps and green grass). Haven’t kicked one up yet either, and I’m mid-coast range. Other than the obvious and traditional knowledge of afternoon evenings being better some of the folks I’ve chatted with definitely noted seeing them anytime in good weather along roads, in cuts, and thicker overgrown stuff. I’m going to keep trying to call them in too with some hand calls as I have known many who have been successful doing this.

Right on hunting Alsea as well. Cams have been getting tons of cougars but no bear since last fall. Best of luck let us know if you get one!

Cougars would be exciting! I hunt with my kiddo almost exclusively so staying still long enough for a cougar when calling may be out of the question…. Gonna hit it again today and try some thicker areas and calling. Always fun being in the woods with so many less hunters around.
