I am in the market for my first scope that will be mounted on a tikka 3x. I will be using this in the backcountry for deer/elk out West. My criteria are as follows:

FFP
$700-1200
Mil

I appreciate any input.

If you can tolerate a 23-24oz scope the Sightron STAC in duplex is a very good value. Then you got $$$ leftover for very good rings and bases or rail. The 4-20 is only slightly heavier than the 3-16 but its quite a bit longer so take that into consideration because you may need a longer rail to accommodate it. Optically i do like my 4-20 slightly better than my 3-16.

You need more criteria to get a good response.

Try to find something made in Japan IMO. SWFA, Maven and Tract will offer a lot of bang for your Buck. For the most part European made is going to be considered higher end than Japan, however Meopta is one Euro brand that will provide a lot of bang for your Buck. I will say a lot of their models are on the heavier end, however.

I two Meoptas, optika 5 and optika 6 both have really good glass and have tracked very well I purchased them both from gr8fuldoug. I’ve been pleased with them as a more budget friendly option. I’ve also had the stac and s3 sightrons as well, great tracking and good glass on those too. Only thing I had a issue with on the stac bill as the eye relief and maybe it was just that scope but the s3 was perfect.

Euro Optic has the Vortex DiamondBack HP 3-12x42 on clearance for $169. They have Razor glass with a 1" tube. It's a definite upgrade from the regular Diamondback. Midway had the 4-16 on clearance for 199. Not sure if they still do. Well worth it

No they dont have Razor glass. I have both a 3-12x42 and a Razor HD LH 2-10x40. My Razor is much better. The DB HPs have virtually the same glass as a Viper.

Razor is XR Plus coating, Indexed lens and HD. The DB HP is the standard XD/XR glass.

Yea I thought the Razors are Japan made, I’m assuming the glass is from LOW but I don’t really know. Diamondbacks are made in China.

Cameraland has the new Meosport R 3-15x50 for around $450. Its a new scope for 2022 so not a ton of reviews yet If you can swing $700 you can get the SWFA SS 3-15x42 FFP for that much. They do go on sale occasionally. You just missed the last sale for $525 which is bargain for that scope.

No they are not made in China. How many times do we need to go over this? Where do you guys pull this stuff out of? They are made in the Philippines. Most likely at the Scopro plant. The DiamondBack Tactical FFP is made in China. Im not aware of any other Diamondback scope made in China.

I think i should know...I actually own one.

I guess I remembered it wrong, I thought the FFP was made in Philippines and the rest of the DB were made in China. I know the vipers are Philippines.

My viper was an absolute piece of trash though.

Sorry if i came off as harsh but it never fails when the Diamondback is mentioned. Someone almost always pops in and says they are made in China. While i cant verify it, Vortex may use both Kenko and Scopro in the Philippines for assembly. That could be why some models hold up better than others. Such as the 2.5-10x44 Viper HS and DB HP get far less failure posts than other Vipers. Kenko IMO makes a better scope or at least a more durable scope.

The OP offered more details in shooting distance so i really would suggest something better now. The very low end would be the Sightron STAC 4-20x50 and that is really pushing it. Probably need to move to the upper end of the budget to be happy.

You can get a Sightron SIII 6-24x50 for around $650-700 at Cameraland also and they are a pretty nice scope for that price. Very tough and good tracking. Made by Kenko in Japan. The SWFA SS 3-15x42 FFP is also about $700 atm and im pretty certain its made at the same place.

Burris veracity or leupold vx3hd.
The burris is a bit heavy but real nice glass and solid build.
The leupold has great glass and about a pound for most models. The cds turret is amazing. Send your ballistic info in to leupold and they'll send the custom turret. Shooting 600yds is as easy as clicking over to the 6 on the dial.

I spit coffee on my keyboard when I read this.

I would consider the Sightrons Doug mentioned as well as Burris Veracity.
I continue to preach that a hunting scope should go down to at minimum, 3X.

Nothing against the stac but I just bought one ffp, with zero stop and you can’t see the retical very well until your around 8x. It’s almost impossible to see with trees/brush as a background vs white targets. If I was hunting I personally wouldn’t go that route. Not to mention the windage knob is so large it hits the saum cases being ejected on my tikka and won’t allow them to eject at all. Target scope possibly, hunting… there are better options. I think the stac is a very nice scope don’t get me wrong but it’s not what I would put on my rifle for hunting. Best wishes.
