Those of you with this on your phone what are your experiences with the accuracy of property lines from private to national forest?

I think it tends to be pretty good, that is if your service provider sends an accurate GPS signal. Check it on Google maps first. Move around and stop with it on and see if it coincides with where you are standing. I have been with Verizon for quite a while now and it's pretty damn accurate. Before I had AT&T and it was hit and miss, although it's been a while since I've been with them a lot could have changed. Probably better by now. The actual lines on the map were good, sometimes a little off depending where you were but not by much. We're talking 10 feet or so. All in all it works but I won't use it this next season too many frustrations with downloading and having it work in the field properly. Thats been my experience with it. If you have a GPS get a chip and you'll be better off.

I'm using it in western Wyoming and am pleased. I mostly download the imagery for an area I'm hunting then use it offline. For that I think it works really well you just have to anticipate where you think you might be and if you want satellite imagery or topo or both.

I don't typically have to worry about being close to private property so I can't really comment on the accuracy of those layers.

My only complaint really is when recording my track line, I'll repeatedly loose the track. Meaning, I'll turn on the record tracks function and stick the phone in my pocket. I'll check the track in 20 or 30 minutes and it will have have recorded then stopped then started again when I pulled the phone back out. I don't know if this an issue with the app or the phone gps or what.

Another issue that I had just recently was when I was walking the edge of the marked boundary for a unit I'm familiar with and the boundary on the app was way off and included a big chunk of land that is not included in the unit. This was probably a error on the data that onx acquires and not necessarily their fault. Like most things you have to use your brain and be responsible for your decisions, not blindly relying on technology.

Overall, I'm a fan of the app and will continue using it. The gps typically stays in my pack in case of emergency.

I used it this year and was very pleased with it. I found the boundaries to be as accurate as could be expected. I think that the biggest factor is probably the quality of your phone hardware vs. the software. As stated above, you just have to make sure you download map sections with the layers you want prior to going hunting. Then make sure you activate the "Use offline maps" switch on the menu. So long as I had downloaded the proper map section and layers, it functioned flawlessly. An extra tip I will share is if you turn on airplane mode on your phone, you will save a ton of battery life without losing gps functionality since the gps functions are separate from the data service functions on your phone.

I used it this year in Wyoming and Colorado and found the boundaries to be within 30' of actual.

The one complaint is have was showing roads as being public when they were in fact not.

It is decent but if changes aren't updated it is only as good as the last info bit transmitted- just like the GPS on your car and speed limits. I hit areas that are 80, but the gps says 65 and hasn't updated.

It was good where I hunted but don't recall it being able to distinguish, BLM for State land, not that it was a big deal, but again only as good as info given.

Many forest trails were wrong as were roads but it probably didn't receive the needed updated info. Not ONX problems, but do be careful

Seems like some concern over versions and updates I got this recently and compared it to the arcgis available at work (BLM) and it was a match using high end Juno GPS versus my cell phone so I say that is about as good as you can hope for and in my opinion this setup is better it cuts ounces down when packing things to the hills

Thank you all for the feedback, definitely what I was wanting to hear...I like the idea of having the app or chip in a GPS maybe I'll upgrade mine someday but for now my phone will have to do cause my GPS came over on the Mayflower and is really outdated..But it's simple and works lol...Anyway thanks again for the input..

Used it in CO this fall and was very please with the app overall. There was one instance where I was near several mine properties and the edge of the property seemed a bit fuzzy. I was seeing signs posted a little further out than the app was showing. But there weren't many suitable trees right around where the actual boundary was showing on the app. I wouldn't use it for marking property corners but for hunting it works great IMO.

PS the GPS quality of your phone is probably on par or better than many GPS units. Get yourself a good charger unit (I used an 10k MAH Amazon Basics unit in Colorado that worked great) and you'll be good to go.

I have found it to be very accurate. I keep state atlas/gazzette that shows public land and use my onyx both phone and gps to get spot on the spot.

How well does this app work when your in an area with no service? How do you load a particular unit/area into an iPhone for this type of scenario?

Download the map of the area you want-then when there and no service simply put phone on airplane mode and use as gps- maps are already downloaded- much like gaia- if you are familiar with that. Works great- all i used past two seasons for gps were gaia and OnX

I am of the opinion the phone app version has too many glitches and its only a matter of time until it will lock up and not work at all when you need it or it will kill your phone. I have the iphone version and almost every time I try to track it glitches or locks up my phone. I have multiple friends that have fried droids with the app and had to get new phones. I really like their GPS chip but their app is worthless unless its a convenience to you and not important that it work all the time every time. If i didn't get it for free with a RMEF membership I wouldn't be paying for it.

The boundary markers were tall wooden posts on the northeast side of the National Elk Refuge, delineating the refuge from the Forest. Due to how hectic this area can be, the boundaries are well marked and maintained. I'm not pointing fingers as to the error, and I suppose I could have misinterpreted something. But I studied the digital boundary vs what I was seeing on the ground because elk had been moving through that area regularly. Looking at the onx imagery the night before and that morning, I was unsure as to the boundary because of becoming somewhat familiar with that specific area over the previous couple of days of hunting. It would have been to my benefit to hunt the area according to the digital boundary, but that was not the reality on the ground.

Also, I have had no issue with my phone freezing, but the app has froze a few times (the rest of the phone was still working) and I had to restart the phone (iPhone). Overall, I like the app and used it regularly this season.

Just wondering if you were using downloaded maps you had created or running it off of your data? Because that is the first I've heard of something like this happening and I'm not willing to buy a new phone over the convinance this provides of cutting my GPs out of my pack I'll just pack a phone and a GPS

Was very Accurate for me in S central Montana this year. Preloading maps and switching to offline maps mode is a must to save data. Airplane mode to save battery. Will work all day long if you do that. Saved my ass this year in a property dispute after I killed a buck so I will be using that anytime I go out of state from now on.
