Just got back from South Dakota pheasant hunting and had my 2 gsp's tangle with a porcupine. Dogs wouldn't back off the thing. Finally getting them away from it both dogs were full of quills. A trip to the vet and over night stay more than 500 quills were removed from muzzle and inside their mouths.
Ouch!

Never had to contend with porcupines in the Deep South but a big boar coon will make you hurt yourself trying to get out of his blind

One year I was caribou hunting, got a bull down and he were hunting a non motorized area on mountain bikes. It was late when we got done and loaded the bou on our backs and headed down the mountain to the bikes. Got headed down the trail by head lamp on a gentle downhill trail with several stream crossings. Went cruising down the hill to cross a stream when I ran right into something, flipped over ate a handle bar in the ribs, flaying around in the creek with the loaded pack. I lifted my head up to see what I hit and I see a beaver zipping through the water like a torpedo.
I couldn’t believe I hit a beaver on my mountain bike.

This Fall while biking across Satan's Anvil in the the dark there was a weird blob in my headlight. As I got closer it was obviously alive so I stopped and took a look with my binoculars. Turned out to be a huge porcupine waddling along miles away from any tree. He turned and looked at me an it was just so out of place and creepy I headed out around it and never looked back.

Super strange. Dog got sprayed by a skunk the next morning and the day after that I biked up to 30 yards of a very oblivious badger. Really odd trip.
