I just applied for the first time for the OIL so I have my fingers crossed. Did they let you camp on range ? I actually haven’t thought about that aspect of it.

I believe a NM governor in the 1940's got the ball rolling after a trip to Africa and the introduction program went from 1969-77.
They vastly underestimated their reproductive capabilities and the effectiveness of the predators here.

Edit: It wasn't a Governor it was Dr. Hibben. Chairman of the state game commission at the time.
He was a early Weatherby Award Winner, and was friends with the Shah of Iran and other noteworthy hunters of that era.

He was responsible for all 5 original exotic introductions; gemsbok oryx, kudu, Persian Ibex and Siberian Ibex. The kudu and Siberian ibex did not make it.

The aoudad are thought to have come through introductions in West Texas and the Texas pandhandle.

The Shah originally gave New Mexico red sheep and Armenian mouflon as well. But New Mexico Woolgrowers argued that they could cause problem for domestic sheep. Those Armenians and Red Sheep ended up on one time Govenor Clayton Williams ranch near Alpine.

If anyone draws a tag contact me, and I'll give you some pointers. I work and live on WSMR.
Sorry to jump on an older post, but you said you could offer pointers so I can't resist. Just drew my OIL Stallion Range tag and trying to gather any info I can!

Would you be willing to chat with me?

Thank you!

I’ll echo chiquitogringito above me. I found out today I drew the Rhodes Canyon on-range hunt the weekend after Thanksgiving. If you see this and are willing then I’d love to chat about logistics, etc.

Since you are a nube and can't PM ask what you want here, there are not many secrets about WSMR oryx that I wouldn't be willing to post public. Since it is a once in a life time tag.

What season did you draw? My wife drew for the March dates?
I drew the march stallion range dates. My friend drew it too! We will have a solid crew out there in two teams and hopefully two oryx down. I've had the opportunity to hunt them a couple times before but never on the range.

Thanks man! I guess I am just curious about their general behavior on stallion. I am reading its pretty flat, with some tough stalking. Do any bigger oryx hold up in the hills? Any strategies and info about nuclear oryx is welcome. Should I be preapred for 400+ yard shots? OIL means I want to prepare as much as I can and try to harvest biggest specimen I can since I'll likely not be back on WSM again.

Thank you!
