Looking for general information on some public land in Oklahoma. If some one is familiar with the central or eastern public land areas in the state I would be grateful to hear some feedback via pm. Or just general information on here about deer populations, density and public land pressure. Wanting to plan a hunt and just see a different place and find a little different experience. I have a couple wma's in mind and would like to ask some questions if any one is willing to help! Will trade some Kentucky public knowledge if anyone is interested.

I’ve done some scouting at Arbuckle Springs WMA 2 years ago when I had a small lease in the area. Looks like a really cool spot with some really rugged areas and rolling terrain. Never got a chance to hunt there but looked promising and saw some turkeys and deer while walking around.

I’m in NE OK and would be willing to answer some questions. I’ve hunted several different WMA’s on the eastern side of the state

I'm going to follow. I've been really E-Scouting Hulah Corps. ground, just debating what weekend to go. I hate rifle hunting and I might leave Missouri hear during the opener of their rifle just to go hunt OK for a weekend.

I participated in one of the controlled deer hunts at Atoka WMA last year and would be happy to share info on the area or the hunt if you would like.
Hey there, I was just drawn for the Atoka Controlled deer hunt for this fall, it will be the first one I have done so would appreciate any info you have. I fully appreciate your post was from 2020 but ill take what I can get! Thanks!

Better get your tags and license before July 1st. NR tags are skyrocketing in price after July 1st 202irst time in 20 years they are raising the out of state fees.
Yes they are. First time in 20 years they are raising out of state fees. The state legislators (who have to approve the increase) could care less since they appropriate zero money to the wildlife department.

I’m sure the residents are going to like it, gona cost $710 now for tag and license, I could go on a whole week trip for $700 (tag, fuel, & food) before. No more Oklahoma hunting for me I guess

I scouted some of the Hulah and Kaw this past weekend. Found a few promising spots but hard to tell this time of year. Did find several tick beds!

Spent quite a few years hunting oklahoma/Texas while I was in the military. Grew up hunting whitetail in NW PA/OH and have hunted them in a lot of states since. I've told many friends that Oklahoma is at the top of my list for whitetail and that's coming from someone that only hunted public land with the exception of some military property. I can imagine the private ground could be fantastic. My knowledge is solely in the most Western and Southern part of the state but if I can help, feel free to shoot me a pm. I would/will pay the increased non res tags to hunt there again. Never found a wma that didn't hold good deer

In case anyone is following this thread, I walked and drove the Atoka WMA this past week. I spoke to the local Biologist, Hunter (a really nice guy), and he said since 2020 and the rise in popularity of bow hunting as well as close proximity to the highway the deer numbers for this WMA are way down, especially for the controlled hunts (rifle, later in the season). Last year the biggest to come from the area measured 155. I saw a few beds, and some scat in the SE portion of the WMA, but no deer sightings. In the NW portion, closer to the highway I saw probably 10-15, all does and most with fawns in tow. Keep in mind this was a 100-degree day in August, a lot will change come the season with all the pressure that this WMA gets.

will be interesting to see how much the new non res $700 fee has on public land pressure.
