Well I hope other Roksliders had better luck than I… Results have been posted for Oklahoma controlled hunt draw & I struck out again on deer, elk, & pronghorn! Which one of you dang NRs received my Wichita mtns bull elk tag?? & how many of you trad hunters are going to McAAP after a giant whitetail this year?

I had no idea they have a draw in OK, but it is very funny to me that you’re referencing OK mountains in a western focused forum

Nada for me this time. I didn’t put in for much but I’d have been happy to have drawn MCAAP again or the buck tag in the Wichitas. I kill plenty of elk in the hills outside the refuge but I still put in for elk down there every year.

Yes you can draw elk, deer, pronghorn, & turkey tags to hunt restricted areas such as the Wichita mtns national wildlife refuge & Mcalister Army Ammunition Plant.
Welcome to rokslide, where we discuss big & small game hunting from the east to west coast & the size of mountain range doesn’t matter.

The Wichita mtns buck tag is the only deer tag I put in for. Will probably never draw either deer or elk tag down there but I’ll keep trying! I drive through the refuge 1-2 times a month for work and have seen some really nice deer in it.
I'm going back to MCAAP for the Oct 23-25 hunt.
Hope you get some cool weather. I’ve never hunted it but most guys I talk to say they see big deer it’s just hard to get them in range. What is your experience at mcaap?

No joy here. 32 pref points for elk. We need to make that hunt for residents and lifetime license holders only. I drew MCAAP last year for the first time in 10 years. Got a bit unlucky as we had primo dates in November and it was 90 degrees all weekend. Guy I hunted with drew the same area, boggy, and same weekend we had last year. Lucky stiff. I do make the Wichita mountains deer hunt my first choice on the deer side.

Ive hunted MCAAP 6 or 7 times. Shot one small 4 x 4, and have had a few opportunities on does. Saw a few bucks last year, one decent one, coming right at me and turned away at about 70 yards. They don't respond well to calls down there either.

Why? Why do we have to name drop hunts still? MCAAP is 4-10(apparently) years to draw these days because guys just can’t shut up.
I don’t care to hear any griping from NRs with the same odds of drawing a hunt as residents or can otherwise buy tags to hunt the state otc. Also, according to odwc you have a 1 in 7.2 chance of drawing the least popular mcaap hunt last year & 1 in 18 to draw the most popular (not sure how pref points play in to those odds). With 6% of hunters harvesting an antlered deer. The hunts I put in for I’ll probably never draw in my lifetime but I welcome NRs to apply & help fund ODWC.

Me too on the weather. The November dates were my top choices, but it can be pretty warm then too.

I first hunted MCAAP in 2021, saw a couple big bucks out of range, and killed a doe Sunday morning. At the time, killing a doe earned you a "quality pass" to return the following year without having to draw. They offer quality passes some years to encourage doe harvest. So I got to hunt it again in 2022 and again saw some big bucks but didn't get any shot opportunities.

I think that was supposed to be some sort of an insult, but I’m not sure how. I wasn’t trying to get under your skin. I just thought it was funny. It’s honestly really cool that y’all have those opportunities. I thought it was pretty much all private out there.

Making the size doesn’t matter argument in 2026 is pretty wild though!

I’ve heard of them doing quality passes if you shoot a pig as well but not sure how long ago that was. A buddy of mine went in 23 or 24 and if someone shot a buck scoring over P&Y they got to continue hunting with another buck tag. He killed a mid 130s buck & continued hunting with no more success.
Your experience on seeing solid deer out of range matches what I’ve heard from many

I must’ve taken your original response wrong, my apologies.
I feel like a lot of people think of Oklahoma as flat prairie & oak woods but it’s pretty diverse. The Wichita mtns & Ouachita mtn ranges can get pretty rough & steep but are minimal in size compared to the Rockies. We do have some decent public hunting opportunities but nothing like western states with large tracts of NF & BLM

Heck yeah! I just had a buddy move to OKC because he got promoted. I’ll have to tell him to look into it

No tags for the wife and I, but our son (7) drew deer and turkey. First time I’ve ever put him in and he draws two tags. Praying that he has the gift!
Some of those youth hunts put on by the CoE are awesome! Good luck to your son!
