Not so fast! :geek: Tell me if I'm wrong "god knows someone will". If you apply, I'm thinking that's 1K give or take out of your pocket to apply. So then with one point you don't draw, but don't you only get 80% back and so that point cost you roughly 200 dollars VS 100 if later you purchase a Preference point instead?
This is correct, except they obviously keep bonus and preference point fees as well.
This is one time that I don't mind being wrong since I'm likely to get a refund instead of a tag this year if all the soothsayers are correct. My first and only time I entered the Montana draw was in 2021 and I didn't have to deal with a refund except that I had put in for a 900 LE unit that I didn't draw so I think I got back 3 dollars or something like that.

That's a good question, I have no clue of course, but a great question:unsure:

Maybe a lawyer in the crowd will enlighten us. Reading all these posts like "isn't there a simpler way to do this? My we brain is starting to hurt from all this thinking o_O
Yes, they can not put in for 2022, but a point during the point only period for 2022 and buy one at the time of the draw for the 2023 year and go in with two

Yeah, that's one of the hardest permits to draw in the entire state. Guys with 17 points have low odds to draw that one.

I don't think outfitter preference affects your odds at all for LE permits, only general tags, but I could be wrong about that.

So i have one for those that know the draw well. I currently have 2 preference points and didn't buy one this year. I did however apply for a general combo. In the event I don't draw do I have to apply again next year to keep them or can i just buy another preference point and apply the following? Basically do i need to apply again next year or can i just purchase a preference point next year? Once your at 2+ preference points do you have to apply every year to keep them?

I saw on the ol’ Facebook that they plan to draw Monday. The guy that posted had a “Trump is the real president” cover photo so we will see if he is a reputable source. I’m planning to leave for a turkey hunt in Montana on 4/20 so I am hoping they have it figured out by then. Turkey tags are cheaper if your draw in the big game draw.

Since I'm on this thread.... what's the process for returning a general tag if you didn't select to turn it back if not successfull in the LE draw? Since I have 3 pref points I'll draw the general, but probabaly not the LE tag. I may want to return the general tag later on. The way I read it is I can turn it back in by Aug 1 for 80% refund, but I don't see anything about the actual process of doing it.

You only get 80% back if you turn in your tag before aug. if you don’t draw u get all your money back minus small admin fee and credit card transaction fee.

That is what FWP is telling people so I'd go with the assumption you need to apply every year or lose your points unless they say otherwise.

They way they wrote the law is basically the dumbest thing ever.

You must apply every other year or your points will be zeroed. You also may not ever hold more than 3 preference points.

I am surprised that so many of you are so negative on these new rules. I am really happy to see a state take action against point creep.

I'm fine with the rule. I have a problem with the way its written.

According to FWP you must apply every year or lose your points. If you call them up this is what they will tell you. The way the rule is written it sounds like you only need to apply every other year. I also attended a bunch of meetings last year where they discussed the intention was to make people apply every other year. However, that is not how FWP is currently interpreting it.

I think it's very messed up.

Montana never had point creep when it came to the basic big game combo tag with preference points to hunt general units and get your basic hunting license. Most you ever could get was three. Only with bonus points if you wanted a specific more trophy unit did those continue to go up. Basically Montana wants to end up forcing you to go with a outfitter.

Yes they did you used to be able to draw general every year, now you can't, that is point creep.
