Off season for the dogs

Just got back from a training morning with my local HRC club. My lab puppy is really making some progress, it's starting to get quite fun. All water work this morning, it's hot out.

My Vizsla tested positive for heartworm this year and is going through the standard treatment program. He gets re-tested on August 23rd and assuming he is negative, he will still be restricted from exercise until the 3rd week of September. So no pre-season work for him. We'll just hunt when he can and work our way into shape.

Was the dog on a heartworm pill?

Sometimes I use a blank pistol but not very often. I just walk in and flush the birds. Dogs don't move until I go release them. My older black dog won't retrieve, the young white dog is natural and loves it. I grew up hunting and field trialing English Pointers so retrieving isn't that important to me.

The black dog will point a dead bird. He'll also stop and stand on a cripple until I go pick it up. Little female brings them back. I throw bumpers and dead birds for the female. That is about all the retrieving work that I do.

Had done much with the dogs with a full house gut and remodel. But it was nice yesterday morning. So planted some birds in launchers and let the young dog out. Last year she got "scared" of launchers for no reason I could see. She didnt think twice about them and had a nice point and held steady.

September dove season opens and im going to see how she does with that. My other dog doesn't like picking doves up
