Hi all
I’m new here and trying to contribute a little with a mission we did in the North Island of New Zealand this year.
I’m a US expat living here with my NZ family (wife is a Kiwi). Been able to get out more now the kids are getting older, but overall I’d say only still a relatively novice hunter. This trip was my first of its kind.
In May 3 of us were lucky enough to be able to helicopter into a remote hunting area in the North island via a company called Heli Sika. The hunting area (Te Wake tops) was mostly open top tussock and some patches of forested areas. There was a small 3 bunk hut for us to stay in with a small gas cooker.
Besides the first day of rain and fog we had 4 beauty days of clear blue skies. Good punchy hill climbs to ridges and a good effort to transit on some of the scrub but beautiful country overall.
Sika deer are known for being elusive in NZ but caught a few mature doe in the open and were able to get a few on the ground over the next day or so. While the end of the rut - wasn’t able to get a shot off a the buck I spotted coming across the ridge on the last day - will need to come back.
Just wanted to post a few photos of what it looks like in some of the beauty spots here in NZ and especially on the North Island which has a bit different country than down south.
Thanks for the read!
