Nightforce NX8 1-8 x 24 for Long Range?

So I'm building out a Tikka T3x Superlite in 300 WM, and thinking of trying this scope on it.

I've shot plenty out to 1000 yards with 10-25 power optics, and killed my only elk at 702 yards at 10x. thought 10x was plenty of magnification at that range.

I'm looking at this for 700 yards in, and my main concern is light gathering. I really think it will be a non issue, but was curious of others opinions.

I have one on my Sig Cross and haven’t had any issues shooting out to 750yds with it.

Magnification is only one factor. FOV matters too. The NXS Compact is a better choice.

Size of the reticle center is the main consideration for me, hard to make one that satisfies close and long range needs

I believe the nx8 has a center dot of 1.25”, so 8.75” at 700 yds

Atacr 1-8 has a better reticle , but price and size and weight are unfavorable

I would agree that the NXS 2.5-10 is a better option

The center of the reticle is pretty thick, and the .2mil/.5moa adjustment is a slight bummer, but other than that it's good, especially considering the weight.
I have experimented with adjusting my zero to use the open window as my aim point, I think it has potential to be a good option, but I reverted back to the center dot so I didn't have to worry about forgetting that I switched.

The NX8 is available with the FC DMx reticle which is far better than the original.


As for as use, the NX8 is actually pretty good up to around 6’ish. From 6-8x the image falls off a bit. It’s still usable, however it does dim and become a bit less clear. I have used them extensively out to 1,200m, and they are a fantastic option if 1x and daylight illumination is required, yet still capable at distance. They have enough drawbacks however, that if 1x or size and weight isn’t absolutely critical, I wouldn’t use one in a normal hunting rifle. Dangerous game and driven game- definitely; a sheep rifle where 4oz would keep someone from going up and ridge- maybe.

You'll want something with adjustable parallax to hunt that far. It can induce a significant amount of error. The 1-8 NX8 is fixed at 125 yards. I wouldn't shoot at an animal at 700 yards with fixed parallax at 125 but ymmv

I have 1 on my 3gun rifle. All around it's an amazing scope. Not as forgiving as the vortex 1-6 razor. But I decided to sell the vortex. I kinda wish it had capped elevation turrents but I set the zero stop and just look at it periodically. I love the 1st focal reticle. On low it's as good as a true red dot, and on 8 gives me good magnification for shooting long range. Plus it's super light weight!

I've spent a fair amount of time with that scope in both the MOA and Mil versions. I haven't looked through or used the FC DMx.

I'll echo what Form said on 1x-6x. Above 6x I needed to adjust the focus to get crisp. I wanted to use this on a hunting rifle but it was a fair bit behind x42's in low light. Aside from the size of the center dot/circle covering a lot of target at longer ranges, it's size also made it tough to pick out limbs and twigs at shorter ranges. The .2 mil and .5 MOA adjustments got a little irksome to me.

I'd like to see the Mil version with a finer sub tensioned, illuminated inner .5 mil plex in an x32 or x42 objective scope with .1 mil adjustments. I think it would make a really nice hunting reticle in a light/compact/reliable scope.

I was shooting goats with one a few days ago out to 525m. I don't mind the fat reticle, and when it's sunny I find 8x quite usable. I actually really like the reticle because it is so bold at 3x and I use 3x a lot. I don't think parallax is a big issue due to the fact you need to keep your head in the middle of the scope to use it at 8x, and depth of field is reasonable. In saying that, for similar weight you can get a NXS compact, and that is what I would use for your application as it will be much nicer/easier to look through at 8x.

I have an NXS 2.5–10x32 coming, so I am anxious to see how much of a difference there will be between the two scopes. I have the most experience behind the 1-8x and don’t have any issues with it, but thought the 2.5-10x might offer me something I don’t know I am missing. I guess I’ll find out.

I was thinking about buying one of those recently, I am interested in how the resolution of the glass compares. My NX8 1-8 has greater resolution than my 3-10 SHV. I am impressed how 8x looks on the NX8 vs 10x on the SHV, considering the size of the scope.

My x42 glass is pretty nice, but I haven’t shot with it yet. There is a significant difference in the reticle design, but they are also designed for different purposes. I really like the NX8 1-8 reticle
