Which one, kryptek kratos or patagonia nano puff? Will be my warm layer for stopping on a himing trip and later on used for backpack hunting as well. Temps down to 25 but mostly warmer.
Check out the Patagonia stretch nano storm. Insulation and a shell. It's limited in colors black and expensive but it's the best all around water resistant insulated jacket on the market.
I would look at the Patagonia Nano Air.... I have only tried it on so no first hand experience but its apparently an awesome jacket. If I didn't have a closet full of jackets right now I would totally buy one
I had a Patagonia nano puff vest, I really liked it but it wasn't all that warm. Not nearly as warm as my first lite uncompaghre. 25 degrees would be pushing it with the nano puff in my opinion. But if your mostly using it in warmer temps it is a nice layer. Just my 0.02 cents.
No experience with the kryptek, but I do have the nano puff hoody. By far my favorite jacket, I've worn it well down into the teens with some layers underneath and been fine. Certainly can't go wrong with Patagonia, plus it's life time garunteed.
Will say I've also herd great things about the nano air as well. I'm fairly certain it's the same insulation that Kuiu is using in their Kenai jacket. Highly breathable and backed by the Patagonia name.
Since you'll likely be in damp places I recommend a decent synthetic instead of down. The Sitka Kelvin line is ideal. I have frozen in down before...very packable but that means little when you're got the uncontrollable shivvers.
No decision made yet but thx much for the replies. Uncontrollable shivers...want to avoid that... XD...but I get cold quickly sometimes. In terms of overall warmth, how does the kelvin vest and superdown compare?
Patagonia nano air is the same insulation in the kuiu kenai. I give the edge to the kenai for having 90 grams in the body where the Patagonia has 60 throughout. Kenai also has pit zips. Although the cut is a bit bigger/ less athletic in the Patagonia.
If trying Columbia don't buy online with out a great return policy. I went to their outlet store and the fit and sizes are all over the place.
I have Kryptek's Down and Synthetic puffies. The Down one is light and comfortable, but no way it will hold up to serious hunting. Just using it as my main jacket with some light brush busting during my spring bear hunt, caused feathers to come out of the seams and one small rip on it. My Synthetic one holds up much better, though I am moving to using a soft shell jacket for moving through the mountains and brush and using my down jacket for times I need to bundle up while glassing or hanging out in camp.
