New 'Tejas' cartridge

I checked it out at Sheep show and thought the same thing. They swear it isn't but that was from a salesmen of course. Cool little round though

No doubt they are fast. I would love to shoot one but they cost too much for my blood unfortunately. The accuracy guarantee sounds good to me but you are right that is a lot of coin!
Edit: Looking at the photo it may just be Ackley Improved versions of several other commercially available rounds. Take the .300RUM and "blow it out" and sharpen the shoulder angle. This can be done by straightening the cartridge walls and then making the shoulder angle more steep. This will allow greater case volume for more powder. Typically they also run the pressures up to higher levels to gain even more speed at the expense of case life. You would have to study the cartridge or reamer specs to determine exactly what the Tejas improvements are and I dont know if they are available or not.

Forget about barrel burners, the claimed speeds of some of those wildcats is getting beyond the RPM threshold of some of the stated bullets...

Im sure cca makes some great rifles but I'm more interested in the cartridge itself not the rifles they build, bit spendy for me!

Im looking at getting a rifle rebarrelled and the 6.5 tejas caught my eye for my dedicated sheep rifle

Yup, if you can find 7SAUM brass, the 6.5 would be simple!

I'm rolling brass for my 6.5SAUM 4s from Norma .300SAUM brass. A bit more labor intensive, plus I'm turning necks halfway thru the stepping down process.
Running 140 JLKs (.630 G1 b.c.) VERY mildly @ 3045fps and they really hammer at that low node. Could mash down the pedal and get another 150fps, but I ain't interested in wrecking all that pretty brass I built...

If you want a proprietary 6.5Tejas, why not consider the .26Nosler? Least you'd have factory ammo available?

Also, do some bullet RPM calculations on those claimed Tejas velocities.

Muzzle velocity x 720 /barrel twist = RPM

Example:
6.5 Tejas
140 gr Berger VLD @ 3530 fps 3875 ft-lb’s muzzle energy

Recommended twist rate for a 140VLD is 1:8. But with that crazy speed, let's assume 1:8.5 will stabilize (my 6.5SAUM is a 1:8.5 Bartlein)

3530 x 720 / 8.5 = 299,011 RPM

Then, email Walt Berger and ask his advice on how he thinks his VLDs would perform at that RPM
I did this very same thing about a particular wildcat I was building, and Mr. Berger's response was less than encouraging...

Just sayin' that this proported increase in performance comes at a very, very steep price. A price paid in barrel life, and more importantly... in bullet integrity! Spin a bullet too fast and it will begin to tear itself apart from the rotational stress against the rifling. Not to mention, the performance on a game animal can and will suffer. There is a higher propensity for a bullet to splash at extreme RPM rates, resulting in lack of penetration. NOT GOOD...

Just sayin'!

KMD I have seen 7saum brass and loaded ammo on shooters pro shops web site. If I see it again I will let you know.

Thanks KMD you've given me some valuable info and a bit more to think about. You running H1000 or? 6.5 saum has really struck me.

Pros: Longer barrel life due to lower pressure and using slower burning powders.

Cons:Brass availability, And more labor intensive..

(all of that info is based upon limited research and not real world experience so correct me if I'm wrong please)

You can also use 300 saum brass correct?

I hear the .26 nosler is a real barrel burner.

Yes, I'm using resized Norma 300SAUM brass & H-1000
My rifle was chambered with the GA Precision designed '6.5 GAP 4s' .2962" neck 6.5 SAUM reamer. With that much stepping down, its a good idea to turn necks true anyway, so went for the tight neck option.
With H-1000, my 140JLK load load is right @ 53Kpsi, and I'm getting >99% powder burn in a 24" barrel. Parent case max pressure is 65Kpsi, so you can see how far off the top this mild load is runnin', while making 3050fps. (#s from Magnetospeed chrono and Quickload program)

The .26Nosler is a different animal, as is that 6.5 Tejas cartridge. Both are long action cases & waaaaaay overbore. Which is fine, I like speed demons, too, and have my share!
However, as in many hotrod cases, the limiting factor with respect to on-game performance becomes the bullet! Push 'em too hard and/or spin 'em too fast, and you turn a decent penetrating 'game gitter' bullet into a friggin' paintball. If you're blowing up varmints, that's wonderful, but not so much for taking big game...

This is my 10 lb. lightweight 'tactical', mid-weight hunting rifle in 6.5SAUM...

Talkin' wildcats is all fun stuff, and there's something out there for everyone! Pretty much boils down to picking the right tool for the job you wanna do, building it and having some fun playin' with it!!!
Good luck & good shooting!

Man the SAUM is sounding better and better! With all the brass prep I would immediately write it off, but copper creek sells 6.5saum brass fully prepped and necks turned so I may have a winner.

What's recoil like on the SAUM?

I just got my 6.5 saum brass the other day from copper creek. Looks like they do a good job. Still waiting on my build though... My smith thought he'd have her done by late summer. I hope!!

Just shot some Copper Creek prepped brass that I picked up 2nd hand. It feeds, chambers and shoots just fine in my rifle. If ya got the scratch, that is the easiest way to get in the 6.5SAUM game. I kinda enjoy rollin' my own, but the task is somewhat tedious. After being fired, I can't tell the difference between my brass, and the Copper creek prepped brass. The necks are turned to the same diameter and they both fireformed nicely to the chamber...

Recoil with the Vais Micro brake on a 10 lb. rifle is negligible. But that dirt diggin' radial brake is gone and swapped out for a side port brake now...

Ace, keep us up to speed when your 6.5 is ready!
